Desk Lamps

Desk lamps are a key component of an appealing and productive working environment. With our working lives becoming increasingly flexible, more and more people are looking to kit out a home office so here’s a brief introduction to desk lighting.

Which desk lamp is best?

Whether you’ve got loads of revision, work from home every day or use your desk on occasion in the evenings, a decent desk lamp is vital. Without task lighting, you run the risk of eye strain and headaches and may also find it more difficult to concentrate. Table lamps come in all shapes and sizes and the best one depends on how you’re going to use it, here are a few things to think about:

Being able to adjust the levels of brightness to mimic natural light is a great feature as you’ll reduce eye strain. Many dimmable lights are also touch lamps, making them extra convenient. For task lighting, it’s worth choosing a lamp that you can direct to shine where you most need the light.

To work out what size light you need, think about the amount of light the room already has - do you need full coverage of the desk or a more targeted glow? Overhead ceiling lights often cause glare on your screen, but a direct lighting source, such as a desk light, can help keep it to a minimum.

Bulb type

It’s hard to keep track of the different types of light bulbs available. With halogen bulbs being phased out in Europe, it’s worth opting for a light that takes LED bulbs, saving you energy and money. LED desk lamps also don’t strain your eyes as much as other lighting sources.

Again, there are so many different options: one style worth noting is the iconic anglepoise desk lamp with its a quintessential British design. As for colours, a grey table light will fit with any decor and if, after a little while, you fancy mixing things up, it’ll still work well as a reading light, bedside lamp or a table light on a coffee table. If you’ve got limited desk space, why not go for a gooseneck light that you mount on the wall or a floor lamp instead?

What desk lamp is best for your eyes?

When it comes to your eyes, natural light is best so make sure to factor this in when setting up a home office. As for artificial light, dimmable or adjustable lighting is great as colour temperature is particularly important. Your screen and any desk lamp should be as close to ambient light as possible to reduce eye strain. It’s also worth considering a desk lamp with a wide or fabric lampshade as this will diffuse and soften the light.
