With plenty of space that's removed from the house, garages and sheds make the ideal storage area - however, it can be easy for these spaces to turn into a bit of a jumble. Keeping everything from sports gear, bikes, tools, car cleaning supplies and gardening equipment organised is possible with the right type of storage. Here are some ideas for keeping your shed or garage tidy and even turning them into efficient workspaces.

Limiting storage to the perimeter.

Utilising the expanse of wall space in garages is a great idea to reserve floor space. Wall-mounting cabinets, shelve, storage boxes and bikes against the sides of the garage will save plenty of room to add a workbench or toolbox, and even a car or two (what a novel concept!). A shed, though smaller, can also be kept organised with a similar principle; storage containers, boxes, modular shelves and cabinets can be attached to the sides to contain smaller items and leave room for larger equipment such as lawn mowers or garden furniture on the floor. Don’t forget about vertical space: overhead garage storage racks are ideal for lesser-used items such as camping gear.

Converting the garage or shed.

You may not need the extra storage, or perhaps your garage offers ample space for something a bit extra; in which case, you could convert this space into a bonus room. The tool storage area could transition into a workshop or den, or you could use the extra floor space to store your workout equipment and use it as a home gym. Sheds are also ideal for transforming into another living space; if built the right way, a shed can be a quiet, secluded office studio, an additional living room or a playroom.

Make your garage door or shed stand out.

Keeping them neat on the inside is all very well, but why not give the exterior some attention too? If you fancy a change from a standard wooden door, you could consider a new material or design. Frosted glass garage doors still keep your space private but provide a nice backlight and can a more contemporary feel. If you prefer to retain your wooden or steel door's classic appeal, you could simply give it a face-lift with some fresh paint. For your shed, why not try glass, metal or a combination of materials for a bespoke style that reflects your tastes.
