Garden Benches

Whether you're creating the ultimate outdoor entertainment spot or the perfect garden retreat, benches have a place in every outdoor space. Because these multi-functional furniture pieces come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials, they can squeeze into any nook and find their way on any patio, porch or deck. Garden benches are ideal for socialising on and enjoying the garden scenery, and can also add to your decor.

Which garden bench options are available?

Benches are very versatile, so get creative with what you buy and how you use them. Garden stools and smaller pieces work well as side chairs, but they also can function as an end table or art pedestal on your patio, porch or deck. Picnic benches work around an outdoor dining table, or they can be placed in a garden or along a pathway.

What bench material works best outdoors?

Since the furniture will be spending most of its time outside, you want to invest in waterproof and weatherproof materials. While that should be your first consideration, you should also keep in mind what works with your style preference.

  • Wooden Garden Benches
Many people prefer the look of wooden benches. They come in lots of different designs, are comfortable and are environmentally friendly when sourced correctly. However, they are more expensive than plastic and metal benches and require maintenance to keep them looking great.

  • Stone Garden Benches
Stone garden furniture is durable and requires little maintenance. However, it’s extremely heavy which makes it difficult to move, and can be expensive and bulky.

  • Metal Garden Benches
Metal furniture is sturdy, relatively affordable and low maintenance. However, after long periods of sitting they can get uncomfortable and can become very hot in the sun. If you decide on a metal bench, you may want to invest in some quality cushions for your comfort.

  • Plastic Garden Benches
Plastic garden furniture is affordable and requires little to no maintenance. However, it is prone to breaking, can be uncomfortable to sit on, and isn’t eco-friendly to make.

  • Teak Garden Benches
Teak is strong and naturally resistant to the elements, which make it a popular choice for outdoor furniture. However, as teak is relatively rare, is difficult to work with and takes a long time to grow, it tends to be a more expensive choice than other types of wood.

How much are garden benches?

Garden benches vary in price, with wood generally being at the top end of the price scale and plastic being at the bottom. Plastic benches can usually be found for under £100, whereas wooden benches can be found for anything in the £100s to £1000s depending on the type of wood and the design. Whereas, metal bench prices tend to be somewhere in the middle of the two.
