Letter Boxes

A letter box doesn’t just have a practical purpose, it is an aesthetic choice that can bring a touch of style to your house or apartment. Just like the art of letter writing your letter box is something very personal. A piece of door furniture and a garden accessory, there are many different styles and designs of mail box to choose from.

What is a letter box?

A letter box is exactly what its name suggests. It is a container for the letters – and sometimes parcels – that are delivered to your home. The most standard letter box is not a box at all and is just an opening in the door itself. Sometimes people like to buy a letterbox cage to attach to the inside of their front door to catch the letters up neatly when they are posted through.

However, some people prefer to have their own self-contained letter box, especially if they live in a flat and can’t get deliveries to their door. These often are locked and can be opened by a key when you want to retrieve your post. Most of these can be attached to your front door or to the front of your home, but another option is to have an American style mail box at the end of your drive, if you have one.

Some of the letter boxes available are:

  • Wall mounted letter boxes
  • Letterbox cages inside the front door
  • Parcel boxes
  • Letter boxes with newspaper holder
  • Classic American metal mail boxes

Are letter boxes a standard size?

There isn’t a standard size for a letter box, but there are regulations for the minimum size of a letter box in the EU. A C4 envelope of 229mm x 324mm must be able to fit through your letter box without bending or breaking, and the internal volume of a letter box must be able to hold a 40 mm high stack of these C4 envelopes. The box’s opening must also be 0.7-1.7 metres above the ground so make sure that you fix your box high enough. That said, British private letter boxes are not legally obliged to follow these EU guidelines.

Horizontal or vertical?

As long as a letterbox can receive a C4-sized letter, it doesn’t matter whether your letterbox is horizontal or vertical. This means a letter box has to have an opening that fits the width or height of this envelope size, equating to a 230-280mm width and a 325-400mm height.
