TV Stands and Units

In modern homes you can't go too far without encountering a TV or screen of some sort. Televisions are usually the central focus in living rooms and increasingly in other rooms in the house, too. In order to incorporate your television into your interiors you will probably want to think about a TV stand or unit. There’s an endless choice of designs, in all sorts of materials, styles and finishes that will prove practical and aesthetically pleasing.

What’s the difference between a TV stand and a TV unit?

TV stands are long tables which tend to be quite low so that your TV will be at a good, eye-level height, and usually have shelves and drawers within them for storing DVDs, remote controls, and digital, satellite or cable boxes. Often they will have pre-made holes at the back for easy wire access or they will have open shelves underneath that allow you to easily connect and install consoles and systems.

A TV or media unit will house your TV and also be a storage unit for all sorts of media items in your living room; sound systems, books, CDs, records, magazines, DVDs and any other technology. They will be larger and take up a large amount of wall space, but if you pick the right style and colour a TV unit could integrate seamlessly into your room. You could also use the shelves to display plants, pictures and other living room accessories to make the most of the storage space available.

What TV stand should I buy?

When it comes to deciding on the style of TV cabinet, stand or unit you want, you’ll need to think about the overall look you want in your living room, the other pieces that you already have and whether you want it to match the television itself. If you do want a unit or stand that will blend in with your TV, black is usually the way to go seeing as modern sets are predominantly black. Alternatively you could go for a monochrome feel and choose a white TV unit to create a contrast. Wooden TV stands will either look quite traditional, midcentury or contemporary depending on the type of wood used and the finishes. Or a wooden unit on wheels with metal finishes could fit in with industrial or Scandinavian interiors.

What size TV unit do I need?

The size of your TV unit or stand will depend on the size of your television and the size of your room. TVs are measured in inches by the diagonal measurement of the screen (not including the frame), and the TV stand should be at least 2-3 inches longer than the TV width. Have a look at our trusty guide to help determine what size stand you'll need for your TV:

Minimum TV Stand Width Size Guide

TV Screen Size | TV Stand Width
30 inches or less | 28 inches or more
32-48 inches | 30-44 inches
50-58 inches | 46-53 inches
60-68 inches | 54-61 inches
70-78 inches | 63-70 inches
80+ inches | 72+ or more

If you're working with a small space consider a corner TV unit or stand which will tuck neatly out of the way in the corner of the room, or alternatively mount your TV on the wall which will free up even more floor space. Many modern TV units come with storage options, which is especially useful in smaller rooms, so look for TV units with storage drawers or shelves.
