We'd not seen ourselves as the type of people who could/would hire an architect, but after deciding on both a loft and garden extension along with kitchens and bathrooms for two flats AND a new garden studio we knew we needed desperate help. With a MA in Fine Art and long history in jewellery and graphic design I had a firm idea of the aesthetics for the flats but needed help with the logistics and endless tiny details. Sam has helped me consider aspects of the design I'd have never envisioned, helping to elevate the project to the next level and making the design for the flats not only beautiful but truly suited to the way we live. He takes the time to get to know his clients, making suggestions and questioning your preconceptions to really get to the heart of what you need in to make a home uniquely yours. With a focus on biophilia and sustainability he has also helped to source and purchase products for the project at a better rate, even going so far as to help me cut costs by recycling aluminium windows from a client who was discarding theirs due to their redesign to my studio. -above and beyond! I had no idea what to expect from working with an architect and was pleasantly surprised and have learned so much from Sam's patience. For those of you also new to the process - this is a real collaboration. There is no formulaic press of a button and delivery of generic plans like the the company we started using before Covid struck and they dropped off the face of the earth. What a blessing in disguise. Working with an architect who takes pride in their work isn't a quick process and requires you to put the work in to get the most of your resulting home. Approach it with this attitude and you'll be as overjoyed as I am with the results. Sam has been worth every penny and I don't know how we would have moved ahead with the project without him.

Sam has done a great job of channelling our constantly-morphing design ideas into a vision that meets our needs both functionally and aesthetically. We want as much bang for our buck as possible in our build (kitchen knock-through/ garage conversion and upper extension) whilst creating an exterior and interior that reflects modern and quirky design. Sam has helped us to tick both these boxes. He has a seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of design and construction methods, materials, and suppliers both high end and budget. Using this mental library he’s come up with some great solutions to achieve a contemporary look at a reduced cost. We used the Design Council Double-Diamond approach to identify our needs and create a brief that captured what we wanted from the build. It worked really well to help get our thoughts down and tether the jumble of design ideas and practical needs we had and focus them. Sam also did a great job of challenging our preconceptions and really getting us to think outside the box. I really like his method and the process has felt truly collaborative. We’ve just had the planning accepted which Sam made a smooth and non-stressful process, and now look forward to finishing up some of the interior and progressing onto the build.

Doorways were widened, ceilings were raised, new floors were installed, and much else! The final result was absolutely perfect, far exceeding my expectations. Finding a professional, whether it be in architecture, finance, teaching or tax, is always difficult - you are essentially handing over what feels like your stubborn and complicated toddler-ish idea to someone you don't know that well and entrusting that the outcome will be vaguely close to what you are expecting. There are times when you get what you expected. And then there are times when you hand over to an expert and they not only meet your expectations but blow them out of the water. What started as our suggestion of a simple single story box on the back of our house has morphed into a space that surpasses all of our expectations, designed entirely around how our home could work better for all of us, both now and in future. We had not entertained any idea beyond that simple box, and Sam provided us with an exemplary design that was not only in budget but pre-empted our sudden change in lifestyle (working from home becoming a permanent transition during the design process!). We were slightly shocked during our initial proposal meeting - and for good reason; Sam's expertise and brilliant design means we have almost twice the space we thought we would be able to achieve. We are still on our journey to completion, but in Sam's safe hands, we have no doubt that will we get what we wanted, and what we needed, but also something that we did not even realise was within our reach.

I enlisted Sam to help me conceive a functional and beautiful space for making music in my garden. Originally I had intended to demolish an existing outbuilding to rebuild something in the same place. Sam came up with a design that allowed me to make use of the shell of the old building and incorporate it into a new much larger and more functional space, saving me huge amounts of money on waste disposal and also helping the build to have a smaller carbon footprint. The proposed site presented a number of problems to overcome which Sam helped me navigate with his vast knowledge of building products / structural design and planning/building regulations. The end design had more of a wow visual factor than I had considered or pictured thanks to some of his more daring ideas and it reflected how he took on board all of the criteria that I needed for the building to suit my intended use. Overall I am very pleased, he was a pleasure to work with and I will definitely be using Bavian Design again for any future alterations to my property.

Sam has been absolutely fabulous to work with. I had been in stalemate for a couple of years, not really knowing how to even start my renovation project. A consultation with Sam, and he really understood what we needed and came up with some preliminary ideas that sounded great and would fit our budget. Once commissioned we had frequent meeting and Sam was able to turn my ideas into a realistic plan, being a sanity check on some stuff, but also really innovative on other things. The work has now started and builders are converting those plans into reality. It is great to still have Sam in the background, as the building progresses to finalise the detail of some plans and advise when demolition has revealed new hurdles. I am confident it won't bee too long before we're living in the house of our dreams and we wouldn't be there without Sam!

“We met with Bavian Design to discuss rationalising the design of our somewhat unusual 1930’s detached house. The priority being to improve the functionality of the property for busy family life. Following initial meetings, we chose Sam to lead the architectural design for the following reasons 1. Sam’s personal conceptual understanding of what we were trying to achieve and turning that understanding into sensible design ideas. Essentially, he “got” us more than other architects who we had approached, their offering seemed much more functional and less bespoke. 2. His use of VR and the latest design packages which really brought his drawings to life and provided us with clarity on what the design would be like once completed. 3. His preference for design and products which would reduce the impact on our environment. 4. Clear understanding of the design process. Sam set about producing three functional designs which we worked through together. Sam used his insight, knowledge, and experience of other projects to guide us to the design we all believed would work best for us. Throughout the process, Sam kept the project budget at the forefront of his mind, advising us not only of the design impact but also the effect to the budget any changes would make. We worked efficiently through the design process, effectively using remote meeting software when we could not be in the same room for regular design review meetings. Once the design was finalised, it moved smoothly through the planning permission phase without issue. Sam is supported by a good group of suppliers who added their expertise to the design in terms of the structural requirements and mechanical and electrical design. I would have no hesitation in recommending Sam and Bavian design to others.”

Bavian Design provided a thorough and thoughtful service from start to finish of our garage conversion (to a study bedroom). Using interactive 3-D designs, Sam talked us through all aspects of the project beforehand and gave very detailed and competitive price estimates (for instance, by using SIPs panels for the main build). Bavian Design's attention to detail and design has given us a great workspace, with some really lovely features such as a built-in desk and window-seat, and the whole experience was made easy by Sam's courtesy and professionalism.

We had large ugly brick steps in our patio garden and consulted Sam to see how we could change them. The brief was to have an open style staircase which did not resemble a fire escape! Sam visited us many times producing incredible 3D drawings giving us ideas we would never have thought of. His attention to detail was excellent and as always with projects it involved collaboration and he was extremely flexible and accommodating whilst also being so passionate about it. The final design in powder coated iron and tiles is amazing and has totally transformed our garden. I cannot thank Sam enough and highly recommend him.

I engaged Sam to do the designs on a house I had recently moved into. Primarily, I wanted them to open up the downstairs to become an open plan kitchen/dining/living area. The designs they came up with seemed to me to be both creative and practical and have been done taking account of my tastes and preferences. My questions have all been answered and patience has been shown in explaining ideas to me - and, indeed, explaining why some of my ideas might not work. A willingness has been shown for working with another company hired to do the loft conversion. Everyone involved in the design aspect has been courteous and helpful. I would say that there is some bias within the company towards contemporary design although I am sure they are able to work with other styles if necessary.

Sam helped us to build an Osteopathic clinic in our garden. Sam was instrumental in helping us design something that we wanted and would fit our very specific requirements. We have been in the Clinic for over a year now and everyday is a joy, and all of our clients make comments about what a lovely space we have. I don't think we would have managed that without Sam's attention to design and detail. He spent a lot of time researching options that would fit our needs and wants, which were constantly changing throughout the design and build. Ultimately his flexibility made it possible for us to get what we really wanted.
