About Us

I’m David Holland, an award-winning architect and an advocate for sustainable and ethical living. I design new homes, and work with existing ones. I am uniquely positioned to be able to offer an extremely personal service, backed by extensive professional experience and know-how. I work on projects that prioritise sustainability, craftsmanship, and simple, good-quality materials. My projects are characterised by their simple under-stated elegance, and careful detailing. I founded my own design studio in early 2019 with the goal of providing a uniquely personal architectural service to residential clients that share my enthusiasm for sustainability, quality and craftsmanship. It’s a small studio - in fact it’s just me - and that's a deliberate choice of mine. Running a small studio comes with a freedom that allows me to work without the financial and managerial pressures of running a large practice. That means clients get a better service, and better architecture. Put simply, I help like-minded people create homes that they love. We start as collaborators, and frequently become friends. I generally work in the UK (specifically the Midlands, Cotswolds, and the Welsh borders), but I’m also open to working further afield in the right circumstances. I am also able to introduce clients to other like-minded landscape architects, interior designers, structural engineers, builders and crafts-people.

I found David on Houzz, usually I'd prefer to go with someone that's been directly recommended to me but after our inital searches I struck up a dialogue with David. He understood very quickly what we were trying to achieve and I can honestly say he exceeded all of my expectations, even now the design phase has passed and we've broken ground I still have regular conversations with him to check in with progress and any small questions I have which are always met with serious consideration. What I like the most is that David truly cares about the project and you get the feeling he is designing it to only a specification that he would be truly satisfied with. We've not finished the project yet but the visualtion gives you an idea of what he is capable of. We also got a 3D sketchup tour of the extension as we didn't want to leave anything to chance. David's service is not cheap but it's definitely excellent value and one that I can't recommend highly enough.

It goes without saying that any type of home improvement is extremely costly but precious. One has visions of grander and opulence, yet has no idea to give it substance or form. Who would you trust with your home anyway. We did torture over this very issue, and met with a number of Architects. this seemingly endless task came abruptly to an end as soon as we met with David. He immediately had a sense of what we were looking for and saw as design partners. Listening advising and working with us to help realize our ideas, with a lot more flare and panache then we could have ever dreamt of. Overall we would describe him as extremely talented, highly experienced, entirely professional, and incredibly patient. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with David, and would do so again.

When we bought our house in a pretty village, we knew we wanted to completely change it. It was the ‘ugly duckling’ of the road and the layout was completely unsuitable for us, but we knew it had loads of potential. David also saw the potential. He was sensitive to our requirements, but still encouraged us to make brave decisions and challenged some of our initial ideas. We’re really glad he did as we're now about to start the build and we're really excited to see how our new home materialises in the coming months. We also found David to be really responsive and he took a genuine interest in the project from start to finish, which we found to be really important when designing our forever home.

My husband and I recently moved into a cottage with a very peculiar layout and in an unloved and frankly shabby state. We bought it more for the location, being in open countryside with a large back garden, but found ourselves going round and round in circles trying to figure out how we could design the interior. We had lots of ideas, but with a limited budget, everything seemed out of our reach. It was suggested to us that we give David a call. We were a bit worried about doing this as we had heard that the services of an architect can be expensive, but decided an enquiry wouldn’t hurt. We went ahead and were amazed at actually how much money it has saved us. David seemed to be able to cut through all our confusion without any effort and come up with suggestions that saved money, yet improved the design and was also able to offer guidance on sources of funding that we we didn’t know existed, which enabled us to make the most of our budget. If we hadn’t contacted David, I have no doubt we would have been struggling to meet our costs. I would highly recommend David. He seems to have an exceptional ability to take in the needs (and wants) of his client and turn them into something beautiful, practical and within budget. He is very on the ball when it comes to things like Government grants and eco-friendly ways of working. He has saved us so much stress. We can’t thank him enough

After one look at David’s website and one phone call I was totally convinced I’d found the right person. Approachable, intelligent, knowledgeable and bursting with ideas. Planning meetings over cake supplied by David’s lovely wife Sarah- who has all the attributes off David and she can bake - were informative and helpful. Ideas that I had were shaped and honed and things I’d never thought of thrown into the mix. One particular pitfall was avoided because of David’s diligence and attention to detail. David is very , very good at putting you at ease so that ideas can be discussed frankly and freely.

We instructed David to obtain planning permission for a two story extension we needed due to our kids getting older and needing their own space. David came back to us with drawings quickly which we approved and were submitted to the council. They initially came back with objections which we weren't happy with and David built a case to object to them. They quickly came back with an approval, how we wanted the build after David presented evidence as why they couldn't impose the conditions. We are very happy with What David has done for us and would thoroughly recommend him to anyone looking for a professional, prompt and thorough architect. Thanks David
