West London's Design Led, Client Driven Architecture & Design Practice
page_type: prop_plus_profile
Nick Taylor's career in architecture began at Chelsea College of Art and Design where the emergence of a desire to marry the creativity of design with practical parameters led to an interest in the built environment.
After completing formal training in architecture at Kingston University (BA Hons) and University of East London (Post Graduate Diploma) he went on to work with award winning, internationally renowned architectural practices, such as Allies+Morrison, Woods Bagot, HKS and JRA.
His passion for residential architecture developed alongside a pursuit of quality, innovation and honesty in design, resulting in the creation of IMBY3.
"I love the excitement of a new project, a blank canvas and the endless opportunities in front. I love the design development as the project starts to take shape, I love the problem solving. I love the in-depth design, where we flesh out the early ideas and work out details that will look great, and then the excitement of starting on site is great too.
"We offer a very personal service. Amanda works behind the scenes so clients mostly work directly with me alone. I assist from the beginning all the way through to completion. I find the most successful projects are where the same person that has the client relationship also has a relationship with the house. Therefore I always prefer to be present at the survey of the house at the start of the project too.
"Our best projects are the ones where I get to know our clients during the project. I can then second guess what they're thinking or what they'd want/need on a programmatic level or even when selecting finishes and fittings."

We found Nick via Houzz and chose to work with him based on his swift response, his website portfolio and his warmth and approachability on meeting him. Nick was immediately focused on our family's needs, the space/design problem we were struggling with and how we could resolve this satisfactorily. Nick identified the core problem - circulation between living spaces - and how to overcome it innovatively. He introduced us to an excellent planning consultant who narrowed down our options s we are in Conservation are. We had started wanting a rear extension and ended up revising the existing dining room extension, completely opening up the back of the house to the garden as well as the opening up the inside. Nick had several brilliant ideas two of which struck an immediate chord: huge barn doors to open the 30' galley kitchen to the period sitting room in a contemporary way without losing the grandeur of the Edwardian ceilings and doors; and a huge exposed steel beam across the width of the garden to support the dining room extension which now has two glass walls. Nick was also terrific on smaller details like choice of patio tiles, paint colours, new oak flooring etc. It was a big project lasting over a year from inception and Nick guided us through the planning process so that we achieved more than we had imagined was possible. We are delighted with the outcome and we fully used the new indoor/outdoor space during the Spring lockdown and five of us all working from home!

My experience working with Nick is exceptional. There are many good architect's out there, however there are few who can truly understand your vision but Nick understood exactly what I was trying to achieve. Above all he gave me the confidence to achieve something a little different to the norm. My builders were impressed at the detail of Nick's drawings and found them easy to follow, no changes were needed.
I can honestly recommend IMBY3

We engaged with IMBY3 to help us with a new kitchen project, we had a wide open brief from simply adjusting the space we already had through to adding a significant extension. Nic was brilliant throughout, technically excellent but importantly to us he introduced and added a number of creative ideas that really enhanced the project. Nic is also very personably, flexible and a genuinely good person to work with.
We ultimately didn't go ahead with the extension, but did have a new kitchen completed.
We are now in a position to add a significant extension to the property and have contacted Nic about the brief, we've also happily recommended him to friends.

I cannot rate Nick highly enough on so many different dimensions -
a. Skilled at his job - Without a doubt. Nick's designs revolved around our needs and his creative ideas helped us make the most of space that suits my young family and our daily needs. On top, the layout and design he proposed looks very pretty and proportionate too.
b. Knowledge of building laws and regulations - Nick could engage our local council in an informed discussion to broaden their understanding and that resulted in adapting our design only where really needed
c. Contract Administration - Nick ensured consistency of delivery and accountability from our builder. When things turned sour and we had to fire our builder, Nick's ongoing diligence came in very handy as he could objectively weigh in. Nick then continued to be our contract administrator for the new builder too, and went beyond his call of duty to coach/guide him throughout to be able to finish a high quality project for us.
Nick takes a lot of pride in the quality of output he generates and is in it to feed his passion. As it goes in most recommendations, the real question is - would I hire Nick again. The answer is an unequivocal Yes.

We used this firm for renovation and extension drawings of our London home. We required a team that would pay close attention to detail and oversee the project build and IMBY3 did not disappoint. We also hired them as the contract administrators for the 12 month project. We found them to be professional and had a very useful approach when dealing with temperamental builders. When slight complications arose on site we found that they had a calming influence and would advise the best course of action to proceed. We are using them again for our new project.

Nick worked with us on our recent project to build a rear extension and loft extension to a 1930s three bedroom semi-detached house.
He was very helpful in guiding us through the project process (it was the first time that we had been involved in major building work) and developing designs that enabled us to clarify our ideas on what we wanted to achieve. In doing so he was very good at explaining the design and practical aspects of the work and building our confidence that the project would go smoothly, which it did. Overall it was a pleasure to work with Nick.
His scope of work included preparing concept drawings, building control drawings and tender documents. He also applied for planning permission and prepared party wall notices on our behalf and assisted us with the selection of the building contractor.
