About Us

Johnny Grey Studios design and architect kitchens, interiors and outdoor rooms undertaking around 15 projects a year, for clients around the world. Johnny has been described as the world’s best kitchen designer (New York Times) and one of the top 100 hundred designers of the 20th century by House & Garden Magazine. He heads a team of artisans that make fine bespoke cabinet makers who make curved freestanding furniture, concrete structures, ceramic tiles, applied decorative and fine art patterns, basket ware, lighting equipment, forged and engineered metalwork. Design for whole house. While we are often initially brought in to work on a client's kitchen, we also have experience with other rooms. We have designed dining rooms, laundry rooms, hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms, studies, conservatories and home cinemas. JG Studios also design offices, boardrooms, studies, restaurants, wine bars and boat interiors. Custom furniture to stand the test of time. At the core of our kitchen environment is the making of fine furniture - stylish, functional and timeless. We have built up unique skills in designing custom furniture pieces for your luxury kitchen or any other room in your home. Johnny Grey designers have created everything from mapping desks, filing systems, double-fronted hallway furniture and circular roll top desks to five-column circular tables, fireplaces, drum cupboards, four poster beds and banquettes. We can design almost any freestanding piece of furniture. Separate quotations on the cost of these are available on request. Kitchen Ergonomics and flow within Unfitted Kitchens. From the kitchen to the garden and beyond. Interior and exterior spaces should interact seamlessly. Our design teams have experience of using sight lines to connect indoors activity with outdoor views into the garden. We treat architecture and landscaping as one. We have four in-house architects who are capable of taking on both large and small projects. We can create an entire home that combines the Johnny Grey philosophy of efficient spatial planning, better storage, efficient energy use and high quality craftsmanship, with visual and open physical access to the garden.

Johnny Grey has judged design awards for the kitchen industry (KBB) for the last ten years and has received many awards including the Simon Taylor Award for Lifetime Achievement in the kitchen industry.

Professional Information

Johnny Grey Studios works from Hampshire UK and San Francisco. Johnny himself was trained as an architect, (AADIp Arch), is an author of three books on kitchen design and has designed over 400 kitchens during the last 30 years. He is a visiting Professor of Design at Bucks New University, a member of SBID and a Fellow of Royal Society of Arts. He also helped set up the first degree course in kitchen design, now in its second year.

I have worked with Johnny for several years, designing and producing ceramics on numerous kitchen projects and other areas such as pool houses and outdoor pizza ovens. I have found him to be very passionate about his work. He has a fresh and intuitive approach to each new project, challenging the standard ideas of what is expected, constantly pushing the boundaries by playing with form, materials and colour. Johnny is also a champion of home grown artisans who are equally passionate about what they do. He has the ability to encourage them to further explore and experiment with their materials and the results of these different skills are cleverly integrated into the final scheme. A very unique and forward looking creator.

I had the pleasure of working with Johnny and his team while I was in England. The breadth of his knowledge, his use of varied materials, and practical playfulness gives his clients a kitchen they can delight in using. Everything works towards utility and pleasure - use of space, choice of materials, quality of workmanship and focus of design. Masterful.

We absolutely love our kitchen. Johnny and his staff came up with a wonderful design which exactly fitted our brief, and our budget. We're not Johnny's most well-heeled clients and they worked very hard to keep within our limits without compromising the finished product. What stood out was their love of design and the encyclopaedic knowledge of the materials they use (in our case wood and stone). The excitement they feel about the work they do is very evident in the kitchen they created for us. We particularly love the curved pieces. These transformed a very awkward space into a place which is beautiful, functional and comfortable. (Even cooking seems less of a chore when it's all so lovely looking and convenient.) The design isn't at all shouty, however. It's a place where we can relax and enjoy family life, not a souped-up showpiece. It was a lot of money for us. We feel we got what we paid for, and more.

Johnny and his team were closely involved in the layout and design of our barn conversion, his kitchen defining the heart of the open-plan house and creating a spectacular centre-piece which, ten years on, still looks fantastic. It is where I spend most of my time when I am in the house, cooking, baking or just chatting with friends and I love it. Johnny's influence extended beyond the kitchen and he worked closely with our architect to define other elements of our house which we consider to be defining features. It's impossible to imagine what the house would have been like without Johnny Grey's influence, nor can I imagine that it could have been any better. Johnny was wonderful to work with, inspired and inspiring, supportive and reactive. I couldn't have asked for more.

The design is just waht I wanted,creating a light, social focal place to our home witch immediately raises the spirit when one enters it. I particular like that different woods and colours has been used, while the curves of the table and corners creates for free movement. The details and quality of the craftsmandship were of partucular high standards witch makes the place not only lovely to look at but should withstand the hard wear a kitchen inevitable has to put up with. We just love it and highly recommend Johnny Grey Studios

In designing our new kitchen there were two major hurdles – a narrow L shaped room opening into an about to be built orangery; and a husband who wanted high gloss white and handless units. We invested considerable hours in kitchen design shops but felt that what we were getting would look like a laboratory or a dental practitioner. We decided that the designs were too linear and we needed some curves and a friend recommended Johnny Grey. We met with Johnny Grey and suddenly we could see some light at the end of the kitchen design tunnel. He listened to our needs and wishes and produced a set of designs which unquestionably surpassed anything else we had previously come up with or had envisaged. He recommended a series of zones for our kitchen – reception/home office ; high tech prep area; cooking /informal dining. He combined different English woods with concrete; marble with corian and stainless steel ; and they work superbly together . We love our new kitchen / informal dining area and it continues to bring us pleasure after 18 months. It unquestionably has the WOW factor and is admired by all our friends. It also has fantastic storage capacity and all the modern gadgets. We were very involved at all stages and it was a pleasure to work with Johnny and his team. We visited the company making the units and were very impressed with the standard of craftsmanship. All of his team are first class artisans
