About Us

We are a progressive architectural practice working at the intersection of design and IT technology, we communicate our designs ideas through 3D media so our clients can immerse themselves in a 3D or VR experience. Located near the Peak District, in North East Derbyshire, the practice heavily influenced by its surroundings and the theme of nature, sustainability and Climate Change is at it's very core. As influences of the build environment, our aim is to design high quality buildings that are innovative and inspirational, whilst still being practical, robust and cost effective. As well as contemporary new build projects, we get involved in the adaptation of existing residential buildings and are always looking for new ways to inspire clients and regenerate the built environment. Our experience covers a range of different building types and architectural styles within the residential field. We work with both old and new properties, including the conservation, renovation and extension of historic properties as well as a more modern approach.

Studio Severn Architects are a team of dedicated, enthusiastic and highly motivated designers. Extremely personable with the ability to clearly demonstrate and talk clients through design possibilities specific to each clients individual needs. I’ve worked with both Julie and Peter on a number of projects, commercial and domestic. They are both committed to providing a first class service to their clients, providing innovative design solutions on time and within budget. They have a vast breadth of experience in their field of architectural design, providing clear design solutions from concept through to Planning, construction detail and implementation. A small, friendly architectural practice that I would recommend to anyone looking for architectural design services from smaller scale domestic house projects through to large scale commercial projects.

I've not only used Studio Severn but as a photographer, I have had the opportunity to see first hand a good portion of their work. What was apparent to me was the effective use of space and how the areas were so light and professionally designed. Something that struck me was the relationship they have with their clients and the effort they went to inspect the finished details. When we considered having an extension, we really didn't have any idea what we wanted or how much budget we would require. Julie came to visit us and explained in detail everything we needed to know. She then gave us a detailed breakdown of what would be required and the costs involved so that we could go away and decide. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Studio Severn to anyone and in fact, I have already done so.

Inco Contracts appointed Studio Severn to help assist with the contractors design element of a building contract in Merry Hill. The works involved the installation of new steels and cladding rails to change the external façade of an existing retail unit. The amendments allowed for more light to enter into the unit making it more attractable to a potential tenant. Studio Severn liaised with the structural engineer and cladding contractor to ensure all the different elements came together during the construction stage to prevent any delays. As a contractor we would definitely use Studio Severn to co-ordinate and design any future contractor design elements.

Julie Widdowson was very careful when it came to listening to our brief. She was able to understand our priorities and our style, but brought practicality and a realistic finance angle to our dreams! We had had a bad experience with an architect from another company a few year’s previously, so were understandably nervous about employing another architect. She has revived our faith in the profession! She has a calm approach to her work, and this this helped our working relationship with her. She was also good at maintaining a productive and practical relationships with the builders we used. I would highly recommend her company.

Having an idea for a project is exciting, but realising the dream you have is impossible, I would say, without the help of a professional. In our case my wife and I found that Julie Widdowson from Studio Severn Architects was enthusiastic about our hopes for our extension and gave us options to choose from. That process alone helped us to firm up our ideas and ultimately make the decisions which resulted in an extremely happy outcome for us. In addition, Julie and our builder cooperated very well and I'm sure many practical considerations and technical issues were resolved without our involvement or our plans being compromised. Ultimately we are extremely happy with the outcome.

Peter and Julie were recommended to us by a friend and we were immediately impressed by their willingness to take on a "special" design new build, and their enthusiasm for our ideas regarding energy efficiency and natural materials. Julie quickly prepared some design studies based on our brief and "cigarette paper" sketches, and we settled on a design which has stayed pretty much constant to the current stage, which is second fix. Julie was tolerant and responsive to our steady stream of small (and not so small) changes, to the extent that we have not had to compromise significantly on any feature, and will end up with the house we wanted, built to a very high standard and very energy efficient.

I would highly recommend Studio Severn Architects. Julie's skill and expertise is second to none and her understanding of our brief was perfect. The technical drawings she provided were excellent and our builders praised the level of detail they were given. Not only is her standard of work excellent but Julie is also very easy to get along with, she took the time to get to know us and was very helpful through the whole process. Our extension was completed in 2016 and we are so pleased with the result - an amazing light and airy family living space.
