About Us

COVID-19 - BUSINESS AS NORMAL AT SNELL DAVID A message to all past, existing and future clients as well as all our regular consultants and contractors. This is just to reassure you all that business continues as usual at Snell David Architects. Like everyone else, we have all had to rapidly get used to working from home. However, modern technology and video-calling is working remarkably well and allows us to stay in touch not only with each other at SDA, but with clients and those contractors still on site - we are even preparing site valuations by video-calls! We are also taking advantage of a swifter response from Local Authorities to planning applications during this period of relative quiet. We pride ourselves on our dedicated personal and flexible approach in all aspects of domestic architecture. Projects include new-build houses, listed buildings and re-modelling / extending existing houses with project values up to £5M. We operate two offices, one in London overlooking the river Thames in Wandsworth and our Cambridge office near Whittlesford. Snell David was recommended by friends and we decided to use them for the refurb and kitchen side extension project of our terraced house in Fulham where we'd lived for 25 years. We called them in just before the pandemic which didn't make things easy. They were admirable in advising on the planning issues and helping me to cajole neighbours to agree on joint party wall matters, so that we could get planning permission for the height of the extension that we wanted. I can say that they were endlessly patient when it came to the detailed design stage and provided good solutions to the compromise's that inevitably have to take place. They master-minded the initial beauty parade of the builders for us and then once we'd chosen the builder and the project was underway, they were very good at having regular meetings and keeping the builder on target to get things done. A thoroughly professional and friendly practice. I was totally confident that they were always doing their best for us. I'm delighted with the finished result and it's almost like we have a new home without having had to move house! I would definitely use Snell David again.

Richard David was a dream architect right from the moment we first met him. He arrived and listened to our half-baked ideas and very carefully crafted our them into a workable project. Richard very quickly drew up plans and we moved ahead on the project very smoothly. Richard's ideas for the kitchen and windows were spot-on. He recommended for us a very good building company and the tender process was trouble-free and quick. The building company TT, worked very well with Richard and his team and the project went very smoothly as a result. It was a joy to work with Richard. Site meetings were always timely and efficient. The overall result was better than we had thought possible. We had a number of technical issues through the build but because Richard is so experienced he quickly suggested alternative approaches which worked well.

Snell David took us through a new build project in 2012/13. We worked closely with Richard and Stephen who guided us through the process, keeping it all on track and within budget. We had a steep learning curve to comply with the newly introduced Level 4 Code for Sustainable Homes but, despite these requirements and red-tape, we met all the project deadlines. The house design was developed from a small mood board that we gave them. We were given comprehensive guidance to help us timetable the decisions that we needed to input into the process and kept well informed through client and project meetings. It was exciting to watch the house take shape and to continually find elements that more than met our expectations. Stephen's attention to detail resulted in a home that continues to delight us. People often ask me what I would change if I did it again. Snell David were so good that there is really nothing except for one missing electrical socket (and that error was my design!). I would not hesitate to recommend them.

as a designer myself i know how to service customers and i congratulate snell david on their patience and level of service they gave me. they are big enough to supply the resources to meet the deadlines but small enough that you form a creative relationship with and to make the process actually quite enjoyable! my project was a large refurbishment and they handled the whole process with total professionalism. they also recommended the builder who was also excellent.

Snell David designed and managed the total renovation of our home in 2013. We purchased the house having done a final viewing with Richard David so we could gauge the scale and cost of work required to modernise the house before making an offer. The entire process was made easier than we could ever have imagined by their professionalism and flexibility. Meetings were arranged around our work schedules and at our house, project timetables were clear and realistic from the outset, throughout the project smaller decisions were handled by email with photographs and costed options and we felt comfortable if we hadn't been on site for a few weeks knowing it was in capable hands. The attention to detail of both their plans and on site management meant we ended up with an absolutely beautiful family home. It was a pleasure working with Snell David and we have recommended them to several friends since.

James Snell and his team are exceptionally talented and creative and use their experience and skill to create spaces within the home that are both beautiful and practical. James' vision for our home (an extensive renovation and extension to a Grade II listed property) was to bring the kitchen into the centre of the home and create a more natural flow to the building. Similarly, externally, our entrance driveway and access to the house from front and back are now smooth and easy to use. James and his team are willing to provide advice when asked for, and are open to ideas from the client also. Their relationship with planning officers is excellent, and they pride themselves on gaining planning approval with the minimum of fuss and stress to the client. Snell David also have long-standing, positive working relationships with local builders and developers, which again allows for excellent communication between all parties. We absolutely love the home that James and his team have helped us create and we would recommend his firm highly.

Snell David Ltd designed and project managed a side and rear extension to our 1930's property. We wanted a modern, open-plan extension that complemented the look of the original house, although clearly not being of the same era. Being North-facing, we were also keen to maximise light. Following initial discussions, Snell David came up with a range of different designs. The one we chose had a number of fantastic design features that add enormously to the visual appeal and practicality of the extension. For example, the placement of roof lights, and a "glass box", which gives a great sight line through the house. Other ideas include a very large picture window with seat to look out over the garden. Snell David also project managed the build. We found their regular meetings to be very useful, ensuring that things kept on track, and addressing any issues as the build progressed. At one stage, our architect insisted that a design error was corrected, which required part of the building work to be undone. Looking at the final result, we think this was entirely the right decision, but we suspect that the error would have been left had Snell David not been project managing. We would very much recommend Snell David, especially if you are after something with a bit of a wow factor.

His skill and professionalism meant that discussions with neighbours, tree protection officers, planners, engineers, QS and our amazing builders were productive and focused. His design skills and attention to detail are outstanding; the House won the Telegraph Best Traditional New House Award 2015 and we finished on time and to budget. I would do it all again!
