Sophie Nguyen Architects is a RIBA Chartered practice dedicated to designing spaces that are beautiful, spacious and noble no matter how small or complex they are. Our design process is based on communication with you; we listen and learn in order to determine the fundamentals driving your project, and we evolve our response with you. During the design and construction process, we collaborate with a range of technical consultants such as Quantity and Party Wall Surveyors, Structural and Environmental Engineers, Approved Inspectors. Sophie set up her own company in 2003 having previously worked for five years at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, formerly Richard Rogers Partnership, during which time she was shortlisted for the Young Architect of the Year award in 1997. Sophie has an excellent understanding of spaces and how to create a fluid circulation through them. She is passionate about finding opportunities for natural light to stream through the new spaces. Sophie is also highly skilled with technical details and will make sure that the project is clearly defined for the construction stage. In 2017, 'Casa Del Sol' was finalist for the London Construction Awards In 2015, 'London Art de Vivre', the renovation and extension to a large house in North Kensington, was commended for the Sunday Times British Homes Awards. In 2013, 'Hover House'- the new basement that Sophie installed in her house, was featured in The Guardian under the title ‘Dig for Victory’.

We have consulted Sophie in the context of the contemporary renovation of a period country house. Sophie took the time to understand our constraints, our way of life, and our aspirations for this project. She captured and highlighted to us the main challenges of light, space, volume and circulation, while being a very pragmatic advisor for materials and technology solutions. A very special treat was a live collaborative design session where we pushed the boundaries of our project. This allowed us to solve a circulation issue that we previously believed insurmountable, and her professionalism and enthusiasm gave us the confidence to go ahead with an ambitious transformation

Sophie is a magician! Sophie has changed my life in every sense by turning a dark, dull, lifeless space into an enlightened spacious one loaded with light and life (also from the oxygen brought by the indoor jungle). Sophie is a mathematician! but with a deep sense of people emotions and psychology. This rare combination of qualities in the building sector is key to allow a smooth process with the multiple contractors whilst not compromising the rigour and beauty of the end result. Very well done, I'm so happy.

Ask an expert - Grand Designs

I met Sophie at the Grand Designs show at the NEC. She was my 'Ask an expert' I went with my plans that I'd spent weeks perfecting and full of nerves showing them to a top Architect. Sophie was fabulous and we chatted easily. She soon understood everything about my plans and what I found important in my house and set about suggesting alternatives that I just hadn't thought about. Sophie was very genuine and enthusiastic. We went way over our time slot but I came away with a completely different view on what was important in the house. Weeks of head scratching was sorted out in 45 minutes. I would have loved Sophie to have been my Architect but just having that short time was fabulous. Thank you. My plans were re-drawn submitted and passed!!

We commissioned Sophie Nguyen Architects to undertake our home transformation from design right through to build completion. And we could not have made a better decision! At the design stage, Sophie always took into account our needs and desires, and then came up with inspiring and practical solutions. During the detailed design and planning stage, Sophie's organisation, knowledge and thoroughness in all aspects of her work was invaluale. We were provided with many ideas and the great thing was we were given the time and freedom to explore them for ourselves. It was fun to go and check out her recommendations; even more fun when she joined us. We had a tight budget and Sophie always took that into account, advising us as to where we could make savings and where it was important to invest. Sophie also managed the build for us. Her attention to detail, her organisation, and ability to foresee and manage problems was brilliant: As a client you have enough decisions to make without the added stress of overseeing the work! Budgets and timescales were also always transparent. We are now back in our home and LOVING it! Our kitchen has been transformed from a small, dark and cold room to a warm, light, airy, practical family kitchen/dinning room. We could not be happier and there is not a single day where we don't think, "oh wow the light and space here is amazing!" It's so practical too, perfect for our expanding family. Upstairs two rooms were reconfigured to create a slightly smaller bathroom and we gained an additional bedroom. The bathroom although a bit smaller it is now much brighter, more practical, family friendly and beautiful. The new shower room is also an added bonus. We could not have been happier with Sophie Nguyen Architects and with the outcome.

I would highly recommend Sophie Nguyen. She oversaw the extensive refurbishment of our house in W10. Sophie was absolutely fantastic at so many levels! Sophie is extremely committed, diligent and reliable. She managed to navigate our complex conundrum: high ambition, restricted budget and no time. And she did it with a constant smile, which was not a small challenge. Sophie sitting herself on the Architectural Advisory Panel for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, her knowledge of what is feasible and what is likely to go through the planning committee is invaluable. She is extremely knowledgeable on all the guidelines the council has and this proved to be critical in assuring our planning was in accordance with what could be accepted. Sophie is particularly good at volumes, spaces, clean lines and light. She always came with multiples interesting options and always surprised us by thinking out of the box and bringing ingenious solutions to any problem. And she respected our point of view and work with us to achieve the best results possible. We are absolutely delighted of our collaboration with Sophie and the results speak for themselves. She helped created an extraordinary space that is making us happy every day!

Sophie was introduced to me by a work colleague.

Sophie travelled over 150 miles to help us out of a very unexciting and traditional design proposal that we had on the table. Her proposals were amazing, we clicked straight away. Without any doubt she was the right person to add a contemporary feel to an extension of our Victorian country estate house. The local conservation department were also delighted. Sophie's costs were reasonable and the distance presented no problems. We love the result. The proportions and careful use of modern and traditional materials have linked the two styles perfectly. I have already recommended Sophie to others and would use her services again.

I worked with this architect to design an extension and maximise space in a terrace house.

I worked with Sophie Nguyen to design a kitchen extension and maximise space and light in a terrace house. We had a tight budget and very restrictive building permissions and she was really smart about the best use of limited space and budget. For example, I would never have thought it would be possible to put a shower, sink and toilet under the stairs and yet, it is a very decent sized second bathroom, looks beautiful and works brilliantly. Having lived for 6 months in the space, I can honestly say that her ideas have turned into a design that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. I am delighted with he way it turned out.
