Honolulu, HI Architects and Building Designers
Urban Works Inc. was formed in 1984 by a collective of young architects and staff in a warehouse space in Kaka’ako, to pursue a practice centered on the thoughtful and careful consideration of the client’s needs and objectives. As the firm evolved in size and experience, it continued on to produce a diverse range of award-winning public projects and building types, while still maintaining itself as a nimble and inventive design firm. After nearly 30 years, the two founding principals, John Ida & Lorrin Matsunaga, still maintain the office as a collective effort focused on creating meaningful connections between people and places. The office also continues to practice in Kaka’ako, and in doing so has learned to find inspiration and solutions in the vernacular, the industrial, & the everyday. Amidst the rich history of this neighborhood, it has cultivated an awareness of site, whether situated in an urban or natural context. We believe our work has an informal vitality that reflects the diversity of many different cultures & circumstances in close proximity to each other.
