Wentworth, Inc.
Architects and Building Designers in Washington D.C., DC
"Our kitchen and family room renovation was not our first construction project, having done 3 other major projects and built a house long-distance. We started this project with another design-build firm that has an excellent reputation in Washington, DC area, but we quickly severed that relationship--and walked away from our deposit--because neither the design nor the communication was what we wanted. The decision to change firms and start over ended up being a great decision. So we began interviewing--again. This time we hit the jackpot with Bruce Wentworth of Wentworth Inc. His three design proposals were inspired and gave us all of our wish list: walk-in pantry, no upper cabinets over the work areas (but lots of storage), large island, butler's pantry, clutter-free paper storage system, more open kitchen/family room, and overall a kitchen and family room that are a better fit for our 1926 house. We also had lots of little things that we wanted such as no outlets on the backsplash--no easy feat in those areas where we had no upper cabinets--and custom-designed pantry shelves, but they solved each item on my wish list, brilliantly. Before the construction began, we had a meeting so that we knew what to expect. Did any surprises arise? Of course they did--this is a house built in 1926! However, all those surprises were solved seamlessly by the design-build team. Any time I had a question or needed design advice, I was totally comfortable calling the architects and or talking with the lead carpenter, depending on what the question was. In addition, one of the architects went with me on all shopping trips to pick out, for instance, the countertops, the sink, the tile for the backsplash, the faucet, etc. Never was I sent to a showroom on my own. Sometimes, the architects had assembled the samples for me at their office and I made my decisions there. What an easy process that was, especially since the architects had already narrowed down the choices for me. All of the team members were professional, friendly, and as detail-oriented as I am. Oh, did I mention that the project was on budget AND on time? And the final result? Beyond our wildest dreams--everyone who walks in says it looks exactly like us, fits the house, and is gorgeous. Would I hire Wentworth again? Absolutely."

Trout Design Studio
Architects and Building Designers in Washington D.C., DC
"TroutDesign played a major role in my remodel of a 1870s rowhouse in Washington DC which included a conversion of a very large garage space to a studio integrated with patio. I worked with the team at TroutDesign from concept through completion. Particular strengths included: design vision that incorporated my immediate needs/wishes but also thought of long term function and design appeal; practical; attenton to detail; easy to work with; good relationship skills for working with my interior designer and general contractor."

Bennett Frank McCarthy Architects, Inc.
Architects and Building Designers in Washington D.C., DC
"I have been working with Bennett Frank McCarthy Architects since April of this year on my home renovation in Mahwah NJ and I can say first hand that I couldnt be happier with what Shawn and the team there have brought to the table. I initially found BFM Architects on Houzz from their Modernized Split Foyer project. I had spoken to several architects both locally here in NY & NJ as well as some west coast firms and none of them gave me the level of comfort and different approach to a renovation that Shawn Buehler and BFM gave me. From minute one my project was never about how to get me to spend more money upping my budget in order to increase fees rather it was finding out ecactly what i needed from my house and figuring out ways in which we could make minimal changes and get maximum impact from them. The design process was smooth and the constant communication Shawn provided was key throughout the process. From design to construction documents and throughout the permit processing and construction observation they have been top notch making my life much easier. Currently the demo on my house is finished and we are in the framing process but once its srtats to come back together i will post pictures and more feedback... but if you are loooking for an architect to help you with a new home or a renovation i wouldnt hesitate to call Shawn and BFM."

William L. Feeney Architect LLC
Architects and Building Designers in Washington D.C., DC
"We used Bill Feeney to remodel two bathrooms and a powder room. Bill and his team (i) prepared initial sketches and final drawings; (ii) helped select equipment, tiles, the general contractor, the cabinet maker and the counter-top supplier; and (iii) supervised construction and coordinated the various parties involved in the project. We initially interviewed several architects and selected Bill because we liked some of his earlier bathroom projects. Bill listened carefully to what we had in mind and came rapidly with interesting preliminary proposals and a budget. The combination of design, material and equipment selected has resulted in functional, neat and modern looking bathrooms and powder room. The general contractor, tile supplier, cabinet maker and counter-top supplier selected were all used to work with Bill and had a constructive work relation with him. Because Bill's office is located only a few blocks from our house, he could visit the construction site whenever necessary. He and his team were highly responsive to our requests and their coordination effort was indeed commendable. The project was implemented within budget; we spent about 15% of the total project cost for architect services. Altogether we had a very positive experience and would not hesitate recommending Bill for similar remodeling projects."

Gardner Architects LLC
Architects and Building Designers in Washington D.C., DC
"As an architectural photographer, I have known and worked for Amy Gardner of Gardner Mohr Architects for more than five years. She is one of a group of architects that is thinking about the future and how she can utilize her generous talents to make better more sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings. I have found her designs to be invigorating. The spaces eminently functional and her designs to utilize the available light and air flow to be of equal magnitude. In short, the spaces and buildings are livable, functional, breathing spaces that are simply exiting and fun to be in. It has always been my pleasure to photograph these spaces and to convey with a photograph what Gardner Mohr Architects have created."

COLEPREVOST
Architects and Building Designers in Washington D.C., DC
"Our home has timeless beauty and comfort due to the expert design and craftsmanship of Cole-Prevost. Each day we appreciate the integrity of the design. Robert and Sophie had a unique ability to discern our taste and needs and cast this in an intelligent and architecturally pleasing form. Their synergy with the contractor was exceptional, so that their concept was beautifully achieved in the final result. It was our great pleasure to work with them - we continue to think this today, thirteen years later."

Cunningham | Quill Architects
Architects and Building Designers in Washington D.C., DC
"I write very few reviews but the service I received from Cunningham | Quill Architects was so extraordinary that I feel compelled to share my experience. Ralph and his team worked with my family for almost two years to create our dream home. Through dozens and dozens of meetings, every member of the Cunningham | Quill team guided, listen and applied their remarkable talents to crafting our rough concepts into the most extraordinary residence. Every detail we ever imagined and many many more that we could not have dreamt of were flawlessly crafted by this team into a place that we hope to call home for the rest of our lives. Ralph oversaw the entire project from beginning to end and added his unique creativity throughout the process of creating the plans and then, on a weekly basis, through the 14 month construction. Cunningham | Quill were on site, every week, working in lock step with the GC to make sure that what we'd seen on paper was exactly what was built. The job was extensive, lengthy and complicated and Ralph delivered every step of the way with professionalism and innovation. When there were questions about billings, he was reasonable and always cared most about pleasing us, his clients. I recommend Cunningham | Quill unequivocally."

Hamilton Snowber Architects
Architects and Building Designers in Washington D.C., DC
"Our 1920's Cleveland park home was substantially damaged in a fire, and we suddenly needed to rethink how to rebuild. Hamilton Snowber did a fabulous job (1) quickly helping us re-think the floor plan, (2) right-sizing an addition, and (3) detailing the whole-house renovation. The results are spectacular: a modern interior 'flow' with traditional detailing, lots of light and great views to the yard, all within the existing historic shell. I can point to many areas where, without their thoughtful guidance, we might have made poor decisions, had we been just working with a contractor. My husband and I couldn't be more pleased with the results."

How do I choose the right Washington D.C., DC architect?

Begin by determining the type of architectural service you require. Is it merely advice that you need? Or a detailed set of architectural design plans? Are you hoping to add a single-storey extension or are you really looking for someone to design you a custom home and handle construction management right through to completion? One of the most important duties of full service architects in Washington D.C., DC is to serve as project managers and supervise most aspects of construction as well as facilitate communication between all other contractors.

Architecture is an incredibly technical profession and one where getting things wrong can literally put lives at risk, so do background checks on your Washington architect. Check they are registered with architecture associations such as the Architect’s Registration Board (ARB) and The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Being part of an architecture association means that an architect or architecture firm has met certain standards, qualifications and practices, and can be held accountable if they don’t meet these standards. It’s advisable to choose architects that specialise in the kind of project that you are undertaking as their existing experience will shine through in the completed design. Look for an architect in Washington D.C., DC that can provide references and reviews of their previous work.

Once you have determined the service level you need, your next consideration will be architectural style. Some architects specialise in designing for traditional housing such as period cottages and country homes, or even in designing modern replicas in a period style. Others have a knack for imagining bolder, more futuristic architectural design in Washington D.C., DC incorporating the latest green technology. Check their Houzz profile and website for examples of previous work. Early on, try to gauge availability – there’s no point in choosing an architect that’s going to be booked for months if you have a tight deadline. Some architects are happy to do all their work online or over the phone with you, but if you’d prefer to work with an architect in person then check that your chosen architects in Washington D.C., DC will travel to you.

What is the process to hire an architect?

At the first meeting, preferably at your property or building site, give as clear a picture as possible of the kind of home you are trying to create to your architects. Chat through your goals, projected budget, scope of work, schedule and feedback, together with any very specific requirements you might have. It is crucial that your architects are clear about their responsibilities and that these are documented in the contract. Ask them to walk you through the process, including the number of architectural design consultations, site visits and what they will be delivering and when, e.g. feasibility study, a technical drawing, tender package and/or planning application drawings. They could illustrate this using a previous client’s project. Also, what does the architect need from you? Deeds, rights of way, deposit, staged payments etc. Once you have covered all this detail, you are ready to make your choice and get started. The architecture company in Washington D.C., DC that you hire will likely start with concept drawings and finish with construction drawings and documents. Some firms even design with 3D renderings, CAD and videos, but this is by no means essential.

What makes a good architect?

You are looking for architects in Washington D.C., DC that have the right balance of creative flair, technical nous, practicality and impeccable service to see you through. Get a sense of whether they are a good listener, collaborator and problem solver. Checking their references will also be invaluable at this stage so look at their Houzz profile for past customer reviews. Ask to speak to previous clients, particularly regarding their responsiveness and ability to work creatively around a budget.

How much does hiring an architect cost?

There is no set payment structure for an architect. Some Washington D.C., DC architects will charge an hourly rate, others base their fees on a percentage of the total construction cost or propose a fixed fee (payable in instalments) for projects such as house extensions or a complete home design. You may wish to pay in stages to safeguard against any possible dissatisfaction with the quality of service. Make sure the total figure and payment schedule is agreed as part of your contract, particularly if you are trying to accurately estimate the cost of building a house.

What are the important questions to ask architects in Washington D.C., DC?

  • How long have you been an architect in Washington D.C., DC? Are you part of ARB and RIBA? Are you part of any other associations of architectural design in Washington D.C., DC?
  • How would you improve my current property and what do you think is the best use of my available budget?
  • Please can you tell me about similar projects you have undertaken and why you are the right person for the job?
  • What will be some of the main challenges?
  • Do you have experience of managing the construction phase?
  • Will you be the lead architect on this project?
  • Can you give me an overview of this project and tell me who will be doing what?
  • How long will the project take?
  • What will you charge, and will that be based on an hourly rate, a percentage of the project cost, or a fixed fee?
  • Can you recommend builders and contractors in my area?
  • Is there other expenditure that I might have missed and and how can I sensibly cut those costs?
  • What happens if there is a dispute? How would you resolve it?
  • Do you have professional indemnity insurance?
