Ben Russell Sculptor

Ben Russell is a stone sculptor working in Dorset, UK. His work is inspired by nature and the beautiful and captivating organic forms that she creates. Through his work Ben explores the natural world and immortalises it in alluring stones from around the world. Memories of his upbringing in the mystical Dorset countryside are ever visible through his sculptures. Often playful, humorous and mysterious with dark and mischievous undertones his work draws you in and gives a wondrous glimpse of the grown world through the eyes of your inner child. Ben uses light, shadow and texture throughout his work creating appealing contrasts between the undulating polished forms and course and craggy tooled surfaces. He will often leave aspects of the stone untouched and in their natural form as an intriguing reminder of natures part in the production of his chosen material, millions of years in the making. Training first in Architectural Stone Conservation at Weymouth College in Dorset, Ben then furthered his studies by training in Historic Carving at The City and Guilds of London Art School. He went on to hone his skills working throughout London for numerous stone firms, private clients, architects, artists and designers over many years. His work can be found upon buildings such as The Albert Memorial, County Hall, St Georges Chapel in Windsor and The Houses of Parliament and he was awarded a Duke of Gloucester award in 2012 for his efforts in the field of stone carving and restoration.
