District Custom Woodworks

Average rating: 5 out of 5 stars1 May 2018
“We had a 5-star experience with District Cabinetry (also known as District Custom Woodworks)! It started with the careful and thoughtful consideration of our needs and preferences in discussions with owner Benton Chrea. He asked great questions and listened carefully to our answers! He came up with a preliminary design that we modified with his help into its final form. We were so pleased in the planning stage for the initial project caused us to add 2 other projects for other rooms. In the end, he did a huge built-in for the study, another large one for the master bedroom, and transformed a very complicated master closet footprint into a design that maximized every bit of space available. He personally visited the house twice to ensure good measurements and to be sure that we all visualized the same end product. Benton will tell you that I have a lot of construction experience (as a developer and builder), and I quizzed him on technical details of the design that he was unused to from customers. Let us just say that we were at the same time discriminating and exacting and he had excellent answers to all of my concerns. The project was finished on time (actually, a little earlier than originally planned) and was finished exactly on budget. Frankly, in the beginning, I thought the proposed charges were kind of high, but we had seen some of his work and his showroom and had developed faith in him, his product and team. The final product is beautiful, met all our design and quality goals, and is clearly engineered and manufactured down to the millimeter. His installation team was fantastic! They spent the better part of 3 days installing and tweaking everything, making sure we understood how to take out the drawers (a little tricky, as they are fancy, really nice, European hardware), etc. The installers were friendly, careful, respectful of our home and were clearly focused on achieving a quality result and pleasing us. So, in the end, my concerns over price were entirely unfounded, because the time invested in creating the design, the quality of the actual product and the care and professionalism of the installers proved to me that my wife was right – we really should pick District Cabinetry for our project! We unhesitatingly endorse Benton and District Cabinetry! We love and use our 3 built-ins every day and appreciate their work (and our investment) every time we use it! We just finished building a pretty complex home and this vendor is at the top of our list in every respect. Our biggest regret in our new home is that we had to buy our kitchen from our builder, Toll Brothers. We would have much preferred to spend that budget at District Cabinetry to get a unique and custom kitchen adapted precisely to our tastes and needs, where our smaller projects tell us that they would have excelled! Please don’t think that I am a gushing kind of person. Neither of us are. We are simply that pleased! This is easily some of the best money we ever spent on any of our homes! If we can refer District Cabinetry to anyone, we will certainly do so. If we can use them again, we would not hesitate. In today’s world, getting what you paid for is a challenge. We got what we paid for in product and in service and could not be happier about it! PS I attach photos of the study built-in. It is hard to photograph the other ones, given their location.”

“Alon is great, we have used him for two projects in our home so far. He created custom built-ins for our living room, and he completely renovated our basement laundry and bathroom. •He is very detail-oriented and meticulous: After doing the initial consult and taking measurements, he came back with a computer mock-up of how things would look (just like the home reno shows on tv!). He spent a week or two just doing additional measurements and gathering materials, so that when he did start work on our home, everything was ready; we weren't waiting around for additional materials to come in. •He is flexible: After showing us designs for the custom built-ins and laundry room, we gave him feedback on what things we wanted to change, and he adopted them. I went so far as to sketch out a picture of the shelves and fireplace posts we wanted, and he crafted them from scratch. I asked that he redo a wall at a diagonal angle, and he found a way to make it happen. •He communicates very well: It is reassuring to hire someone that knows his materials and equipment so well. He talked to us every morning about how the project was going, down to the tiniest screw. •He is a perfectionist: He takes pride in his work, every job is special for him. He ripped up and redid tiles for us, because it wasn't perfectly straight and level. He made our shelves of a slightly thicker material so they wouldn't bow over time. •He is present: Unlike other companies, he isn't managing different teams; he only takes one project at a time, and does most of the important work himself. If you have any concerns, you just talk to him. •He is trustworthy: we gave him our house key to lock after he was done in the afternoons. •And he is honest: The estimate he gave at the start of both our projects was the final cost; he didn't add a cent. We have recommended him to all of our friends, and we will use him in the future!”

“I had book case/cabinet designed and built by Jed Dinger Company. The cabinet was built from solid wood and plywood arch that had faux finished to make it look like rust steel. The cabinet has thick glass shelves holding by steel cables. His work is an art piece that compliments the arch roof line. Jed is a designer and also cabinet builders so he understand how wood can be made. Above all he is a perfectionist so this says it all about his project!”

“We contracted Terry to build a cabinet/media area for us. He took our design and with very few modifications was able to produce our design. From initial visit to finish we were impressed with the time, effort and first class workmanship put into this. Every step was accounted for and our installed cabinet was finished on time and budget. We look forward to working with Terry again. Highly recommend Terry to all.”

“Metropolitan Woodworking was recommended to us by a neighbor in our Bethesda condominium. We were taking a fairly small second bedroom and changing it from a bedroom space into an office/guest bedroom. What Dave Scholar immediately understood was the "space" issue. His built-in was exactly the right size to meet our needs and to keep the room as open and spacious as possible. Doug, Dave's craftsman, was wonderful in his workmanship and his courtesy at arriving when scheduled and cleaning up after each appointment. We could not be happier. We now have two neighbors who after our room converted are having their rooms renovated in a similar way. We cannot say enough about how happy we are with Metropolitan Woodworking and the room they created for us. Elizabeth & Dale Snape”

“My experience with Gerry Hurley couldn't have been better. I was hoping for a serviceable bookshelf. Instead, I was given a unique and wonderful work of art which, besides fulfilling all my practical requirements, has become the aesthetic centerpiece of my living-room. Gerry is an old school craftsman with a thoroughly modern flair for design. He's fun, he's conscientious, he listens to his client, and he delivers on budget and on time. I'd give him extra stars if I could. Lynne McKelvey, NW Washington DC As an architectural photographer myself, I had the pleasure of watching Gerry design and complete two mounted bookshelves for our apartment. He is thorough, beginning with an extensive consultation on what we wanted, and how it would fit into our existing decor. His completed work shows that he is true craftsman who take great pride in his work. I would certainly recommend him highly to any client seeking custom-made projects for the home or office. “Jon built a truly beautiful built-in bookshelf for our house. It is a solid, wonderful piece that will last decades. His design skills are spot-on, and the wood options he offers provide options beyond just oak and maple. He incorporated less-expensive options on the non-visible portions of the shelf, to keep the costs down. To allow access to electrical panels (required for code) and air vents (required for ventilation), he created magnetic panels with elegant handles. If I need anything else built, he's the first person I'll call.”
