About Us

Balance is a residential interior design consultancy based in SW UK. We cover projects across Wiltshire, Somerset, Bath, Bristol, Frome and beyond. We believe that excellent interior design is about finding that sweet spot between what could oppose - aesthetics & function, period & modern, symmetry & offset. In Balance, clients will find a partner to weave in clever design ideas that are both practical and beautiful, ensuring that their spaces work harder and smarter. We provide an approachable and friendly interior design service which can be tailored to your needs, from initial concept through to full design and implementation. Our core philosophy is that spaces should resonate with and centre around the people who occupy them, and this is at the heart of the design process. We begin by gathering an understanding of how you live, work and play in your spaces every day, identifying areas that require attention so we can optimise the functionality and organisation of your home. This is paired with an understanding of your aesthetic vision for the space so that I can design spaces that are stylish, coherent and have a sense of ‘flow’. Our design style leans towards calm interiors with a sense of space and organisation. We focus on light, layering and materiality for a pared back and relaxed style which is at once authentic, warm and inviting. We believe that the spaces in which we live are closely linked to our sense of wellbeing, so rather than follow trends, I strive for a style which connects with the client and sparks joy every day. For the private client, whether you are looking for a one-day consultation to organise your thoughts and gain direction and inspiration for a room re-vamp, or you are undertaking a full renovation project, we would love to hear from you. Gemma undertook a full house refurbishment for us at the end of 2021 & I still come home every day & absolutely love the house! She listened to what we liked & disliked, came up with great ideas & pushed us slightly out of our comfort zone but she was right every time! She makes the whole process super easy, sending ideas & mood boards & bringing round samples. Gemma was happy to work with our builders too!! I can’t recommend her highly enough!

We cannot recommend Gemma enough as an interior designer. She was a pleasure to work with from start to finish on our 12-month home design project. Her attention to detail and ability to bring our vision to life was truly impressive. From the very beginning, Gemma took the time to understand our style and preferences, and she was able to expertly incorporate them into the design of our home. She was always available to answer our questions and provide suggestions, and she managed to take both our preferences into account creating one single design vision that worked for us both. Working with Gemma on our house refurb was the best decision I ever made and I was absolutely delighted with the way she transformed our house - both from a design and a project management point of view. She followed the brief meticulously, was professional, approachable, extremely hard working and great fun to be with. Gemma's brief was to help me redesign the house to ensure it was set up for the way we live our busy lives, to get the most out of the space in the house and to breathe a new lease of life into the rather tired decor! She delivered on every level. She spent extremely useful time up front to ensure she fully understood our needs and then followed a very professional and effective spacial and design planning process. This was incredibly important as it meant we were on the same page from beginning to end. She was also able to provide me with amazing visual concepts, CAD plans and renders so I was able to visualise the recommendations she was making, which made making decisions much easier. Her incredible sense of style and knowledge of design was invaluable when choosing different fabrics, paints, bathroom materials and furniture and she had the perfect balance of listening to what I wanted but also sensitively nudging me to be brave in my decisions. I absolutely love everything that she has designed and sourced for us: from unique bathroom tiles and stunning wooden flooring, to coffee tables, sofas, curtains and bespoke joinery (and much more!). Gemma is genuinely a joy to work with. She is approachable and flexible and put her life and soul into our project. She held my hand through every stage of the process and has helped transform our house into a wonderfully stylish yet cosy family home. I am happy to wax lyrical to anyone who is considering working with Gemma, she is a total dream and absolutely brilliant at what she does.

We have been working with Gemma remotely whilst renovating our 1930s home over the past year. I didn’t know how to pull the house together to achieve a better flow and a modern cosy feel. Gemma has helped with mood boarding, layouts, tile choices, colour schemes, styling and much more. Her help and inspirational ideas have been invaluable to us and her input has really transformed how our home is feeling, we couldn’t be happier. Gemma helped us with a huge number of things during a full home renovation - room layouts, lighting, colours, kitchen / bathroom design and colours, tiles, electrical points, ... (basically everything)! Gemma was a real joy to work with. She was highly collaborative and a great listener, while kindly pushing us to consider and make choices that were within our taste but also pushed us to be bolder and more adventurous than we would have been ourselves. We've been in the house now a few months, and absolutely love it. Don't think we woudl have come anywhere close to such a great finished project without Gemma. I would definitely recommend Balance! We worked with Gemma from Balance Interior Design to renovate a victorian maisonette flat and we couldn't recommend her services more strongly. Her input was invaluable on so many levels. She gave us great advice on some architectural changes that have helped us make best use of space, brighten up dark areas etc. She spent a huge amount of time getting to the bottom of who we are, both individually and as a family, and making sense of our eclectic mix of design inspirations and preferences. This allowed her to come up with a design direction for every room that simply wow-ed us. In a subsequent phase Gemma produced detailed designs for a new kitchen, a new bathroom (including a custom vanity unit), lighting, color-work and several other aspects of the flat. Here too, Gemma combined a great eye for design, a strong sense of pragmatism and an incredible attention to detail. She was also very knowledgeable about lead times, costs and sequencing of works. In short, Gemma really took all the pain out of the process and inupt a wealth of ideas for beautiful designs. She delivered everything we hoped for and much much more, despite the added complication of working during lockdown. We had the sense throughout that she was as dedicated to this project as if it were her own home, if not more. Crucially, she was also an absolute pleasure to work with. We couldn't recommend her more.

My partner and I worked with Balance at the very beginning of our renovation project. Gemma was so crucial in those early stages of the works to help us figure out rooms' layouts, materials to use, electrical points and generally helping us navigate that really difficult initial stage while being careful our budget and tastes! We hired Gemma to help bring our reception area, changing rooms and other internal space to the high standards required of the London Boutique Fitness Market. Gemma's attention to detail was brilliant and helped not only create a beautiful space but also something that was highly functional for day to day commercial operations. We have had compliments non stop about how the space works, the atmosphere it creates and also how the design Gemma implemented has combined seamlessly with the brand. On top of that, Gemma also helped source materials, was always conscious of the budget we were working towards and always provided multiple options for each element of the design so that we felt very much involved in the process throughout. Couldn't recommend enough!
