“Let’s see—how to begin reflections on our experience with Kathleen Beall, ASID? Would it be helpful for you to know that now almost 10 years after our rather extensive remodel, characterized by countless hours of deliberation, hundreds of options and many, many decisions, all anchored in tandem with Kathleen, we see her handiwork in every nook and cranny of our house. That should surprise none—what might surprise is that we find ourselves as pleased with her help today as we were in 2005—and we look in vain for a single mistake. Would it be helpful for you to know that she made every step of a complete remodel not only unerring, but dare I say it, pleasurable and interesting as well? Would it be helpful for you to know that not once—not even once in a process that lasted over a year did we feel she pressured us in even the slightest way to do something, to choose something, to decide something we were not ready for, or comfortable with? Would it be helpful for you to know that as powerfully insightful and well informed she was on options, suppliers, ideas, creative applications, thinking outside the box, her greater skill just might have been her willingness to listen and explore before advising? She began not with samples, but with us—with our life styles, our practices, our rhythms. She anchored her creativity in not only these but unapologetically within in our budget as well—which for us was a real blessing for each choice we made was our first choice, not something we had to settle on because we couldn’t afford something better. In the scheme of things our project was small potatoes—a track home remodel—would it be helpful for you to know that Kathleen made us feel like we were William Randolph Hearst remodeling San Simeon? And at the end of the day Julia Morgan herself could have done no better by us! She responded quickly to every call, handled patiently ever inquiry, patiently spent time with us that the project simply didn’t—couldn’t justify. She would slip by, to check on work and check on us without our bidding. She intervened with us, rather for us, in wonderfully helpful ways we could never have envisioned--with contractors and subcontractors for example. She took the time to drive us to suppliers to view options, and when on occasion we felt completely overwhelmed with choice? She brought a few carefully selected options to us to consider in the almost quiet of our home. She opened our minds to things we would have had no way to even consider—e.g. why a davenport here, she wondered—tell me how you use this space—and then she said, “—how about four comfortable chairs instead?” And no small part of her brief is her endless supply of talented folks to circle around and complete this task or that. How in the world would we have known to shop for chairs in Orange County, purchase hard wood for the floors from a Temecula supplier, secure granite from Palm Springs, employ an artist to confront the challenge of bathroom and living room walls—and transforming them into works of art, purchase light fixtures in Laguna Beach? Is it possible for a couple to live through an extended remodel of more than a year with subs and construction crew who at times felt almost as tenants and never once have a sense of frustration or angst? Well, such was our experience, and a lion’s share of the credit goes to Kathleen as guide who though it all worked well beyond her brief, inserted her quiet dignity, artistry, confidence and skill into the whole process, and by the end had become not Interior Designer as much as friend and family. It was and is both magic and fun to be with her; still is and there is simply no way we would qualify our recommendation of her work or her heart to anyone desiring assistance of an Interior Designer.”
