I've been enjoying garden design and landscaping for 15 years. It's a pleasurable process of helping clients find what exactly they would most like from their garden space. I help them to evolve their current gardens or start from scratch and design and construct spaces that appeal to their taste. I do this by creating a variety of elements within a project including new flower borders, lawn shapes, patios, arches, fences, trellis work, water features and rockeries, and of course, planting. This can be done in a modern or traditional way. I like to celebrate a variety of shapes and sizes to create interest, depending on the design. Many clients like evergreen, 'low maintenance' plant combinations. Other clients are keen gardeners and enjoy more flowers and foliage and enjoy the aftercare maintenance. I'm available to do design work and costing is flexible based on the complexities of the request. I aim to have three meetings with clients and take them through a process of finding out what most excites them and hope to inspire their use of space. Eventually I present a final scaled drawing to allow construction to begin. I can then source quotations from local professional landscapers on behalf of my clients. Once the project is underway, I aim to make three visits to the site of the build to help guide the building of the garden, liaising with the landscaper. I generally source the plants and position them ready for them to be be planted. Canadian born, I've lived in the UK for 25 years. I'm based in Hastings, East Sussex. I'm a keen watercolour artist and classical guitarist.

“I PASSIONATELY BELIEVE a well-designed garden is one that looks harmonious with its surroundings. Working with both the natural environment, style of house as well as the wider landscape, I interpret my clients' wishes to ensure the gardens I create are not just visually stunning but look as if they were always meant to be there. Using a fusion of both ornamental and natural planting, my designs encourage wildlife into the garden to create a vibrant haven for all and a feast for the senses. As a garden historian, I also take great pleasure in reinvigorating and restoring gardens of distinction.”

David Sarton has worked in horticulture since the age of 14. Working for a previous supplier of plants to RHS Gardens he learnt the basics of plant management and horticultural design ‘on the job’. As a natural progression, with his love of photography, David moved into horticultural photography working as an commissioned photographer at RHS Wisley for 6 years in the late 90’s, early 2000’s. During that time David joined the Professional Garden Photographers Association (PGPA) and has been photographing RHS Show Gardens at Chelsea and Hampton Court since 2000. He started designing gardens at the same time and won his first Gold medal at the Kent Show in 2004, this was followed by a further Gold and Top Gold in 2005 and 2006. David Sarton has been awarded a RHS Gold Medal for his first garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2013. A summer garden called Athanasia. David now runs his own garden design business in the Weald of Kent, offering a full design and landscaping package incorporating his love of horticulture, colour and balance to interpret the project theme, enhancing and producing a design to meet and exceed a client’s expectations and desires.

Since graduating from the London College of Garden Design in the summer of 2014, Sarah has been working with a wide range of private clients to create beautiful gardens in her home area of East Sussex. She runs a successful garden maintenance company and her passion for and understanding of plants feeds into the outdoor spaces she creates, where the emphasis is on sympathetic hard landscaping and dynamic, sustainable planting that is best suited to its environment. Sarah has also worked with local authorities and charities to create community gardens and various installations. Her latest project involved creating a market garden at St Anselm's Church in Kennington, London on behalf of the charity Tomorrow's People. This year, Sarah won a Gold medal at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in the Conceptual category for her DialAFlight Synaesthesia Garden. Working with the UK Synaesthesia Association, the garden was built inside a tent and incorporated both music and a range of coloured lighting, alongside innovative planting and bespoke sculptures. Sarah's work is inspired in equal parts by her love of plants and the quintessential English gardens in her locale, such as Sissinghurst and Great Dixter and her interest in the contemporary art scene. She aims to carry on creating gardens that are as individual as the people who live with them.
