“Nicola is an excellent, highly creative Landscape Architect, who was able to take a very complicated and unusual brief and create inspired and beautiful designs. Our project is a recreation of an historic garden, which is part of the University of Bristol. Although not a strict restoration, we wanted to return some of the original features and layout to the garden, but also create a space which worked for the students and public who will use the garden. Throughout the whole process, Nicola has worked closely with us on all parts of the design and implementation, always being available with advice and hands-on help when needed. She is friendly, personable and a good communicator. and takes the time to make her process accessible, so we have felt able to contribute to the overall design. Nicola's flexibility and quick thinking have been invaluable, as our project has many moving parts, and she has been able to adapt and give us options to suit our needs as the brief has changed along the way. “Claire of Iron Butterfly Design is an exceptional garden designer with a fabulous eye for detail as well as deep knowledge and expertise about plants. She is clearly passionate about her work and this shines through in her work ethic and dedication to the job. We were very fortunate to find Claire last year (our garden is the Childs Hill courtyard garden featured on her website) when we were doing major renovation work and she immediately stood out from other garden designers we interviewed . Not only was her fee very reasonable, she was also happy to work to our budget and tailor the project to our requirements. She came up with a fantastic design that would work in our tricky awkward-shaped garden and she was patient when explaining things to us (complete garden novices). She was always respectful of our preferences while at the same time not being afraid to give advice and feedback. Claire sourced and spec-ed hard and soft landscaping materials for us, designed custom built-in storage benches and presented her designs beautifully, with great attention to detail. She was 100% reliable and punctual, very resourceful in finding alternatives if we asked her to, and very flexible. She was also very considerate of our house and ensured that it remained clean - no mean feat when carrying plants, compost etc through the living room! Claire totally transformed our back garden from a drab and depressing space to a beautiful zen-like courtyard retreat. It is now our favourite space in the house. Claire is now based in Bristol but lucky for us, she still recently found the time to come back all the way to London to do some maintenance work on our garden, as well as transform our front garden too ! We think her willingness to go the extra mile says it all. Friends and family who come to visit always ask us who designed our garden. “When we met Steve we didn't really know where to start with our garden, having very little funds to work with upfront Steve encouraged us to focus our money into a final design that we could work towards. “We wanted to turn our garden into a relaxing space, that offered privacy from neighbouring properties. From our very first consultation with Ann, I felt completely at ease that we would be delighted with the end result. She took time to probe our high level thinking and really explore what we wanted to use our garden for, from entertaining and barbecues, to relaxation, and even what wildlife we wanted to attract. Ann took soil samples and went through in some detail what plants we wanted, and whether we wanted a garden that required a lot or little maintenance. She made it clear that she wanted to create a garden that integrated with our lifestyle. We discussed budget and timescales openly, which for us meant a design that we could implement in stages over a 3-4 year period. Ann worked very quickly and in just a couple of weeks she delivered the outline design to us in person taking the time to talk though her design and thinking. It took us by surprise, in a positive way. It defined a very creative use of what is a relatively large (but sloped) space, and incorporated all of the requirements we had specified, and on top of that had a 'wow' factor, that we could never have imagined. Over the next few weeks, Ann firmed up the design and provided several other views including construction plans for the landscapers to use, and planting plans. Each phase had an estimated costing, so we can understand clearly what we are heading into. We're massively excited about implementing Ann's design and watching it come together to transform our home life. Throughout the whole design process Ann was attentive, extremely personable, and her passion for her work was both obvious and engaging. The end result is beyond anything we imagined.
