I've been enjoying garden design and landscaping for 15 years. It's a pleasurable process of helping clients find what exactly they would most like from their garden space. I help them to evolve their current gardens or start from scratch and design and construct spaces that appeal to their taste. I do this by creating a variety of elements within a project including new flower borders, lawn shapes, patios, arches, fences, trellis work, water features and rockeries, and of course, planting. This can be done in a modern or traditional way. I like to celebrate a variety of shapes and sizes to create interest, depending on the design. Many clients like evergreen, 'low maintenance' plant combinations. Other clients are keen gardeners and enjoy more flowers and foliage and enjoy the aftercare maintenance. I'm available to do design work and costing is flexible based on the complexities of the request. I aim to have three meetings with clients and take them through a process of finding out what most excites them and hope to inspire their use of space. Eventually I present a final scaled drawing to allow construction to begin. I can then source quotations from local professional landscapers on behalf of my clients. Once the project is underway, I aim to make three visits to the site of the build to help guide the building of the garden, liaising with the landscaper. I generally source the plants and position them ready for them to be be planted. Canadian born, I've lived in the UK for 25 years. I'm based in Hastings, East Sussex. I'm a keen watercolour artist and classical guitarist.

“I PASSIONATELY BELIEVE a well-designed garden is one that looks harmonious with its surroundings. Working with both the natural environment, style of house as well as the wider landscape, I interpret my clients' wishes to ensure the gardens I create are not just visually stunning but look as if they were always meant to be there. Using a fusion of both ornamental and natural planting, my designs encourage wildlife into the garden to create a vibrant haven for all and a feast for the senses. As a garden historian, I also take great pleasure in reinvigorating and restoring gardens of distinction.”

With her quirky artists eye and creative drive, she can turn your garden around, focusing on practical stylish design schemes that can give your outdoor space a new lease of life! Farlam & Chandler is a creative collaboration between Harriet Farlam and Ben Chandler. Together they have over 25 years of experience within the garden design and construction industry. Working on varied projects worldwide, from coastal gardens to country estates and landscapes in the UK and USA. Their diverse wealth of experience has also brought them to help deliver two RHS Chelsea Gold and Silver medal winning gardens over the recent years. Together they help provide a balance of creative, practical and timeless gardens that respond to the contextual surrounding of the site. Allowing the client to feel immersed and deeply rooted in the experience of being in their own space. The garden is much more than an external space, many provide the ability to live, dine and relax as you would within your home. From the start of the process there is continuing dialogue between client and designer to allow for a consistently enjoyable process, with the client’s vision at the forefront of any conversation. Creating both an emotional response to the site but also a practical one, we work with local craftspeople to help create spaces of meaning, that are often defined in response to local character, interiors and taste. This collaboration makes for a successful relationship for years to come. We work closely with architects, interior designers and talented specialists such as sculptors and furniture makers to create a harmonious relationship between the house and garden. Farlam & Chandler is a garden design practice that seeks to find the true essence of what a garden means to its beholder. A garden is an ever-evolving element, the response to this is an evolving process. We tailor the entire process to the individual client and site, as no one or place is the same.

For Jo Thompson, designing a garden is very much a partnership between designer and the client: Jo creates inspired and inspirational spaces which sit beautifully and easily in their location. Over the years, she has also designed several show gardens for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, winning numerous awards including Gold medal and and Best in Show, as well as Best New Rural Garden. Jo is a member of the RHS Gardens Committee and is Garden Advisor to RHS Rosemoor. She is a Registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers and is also a member of the RHS Shows Selection Panel. Jo Thompson’s Sea Gem is an exquisite interpretation of a sandy dune-like garden in front of a beach house which is not only arrestingly beautiful, but a master class in designing for a specific locality and capturing perhaps the most important aspect of good design – sense of place”
