Peter Reader Landscapes

My garden was a mess having been neglected for several years and I wanted to start again from scratch but needed some new ideas after the previous 'cottage garden' look. Luckily for me, Peter was recommended by a couple of friends. He was a pleasure to work with because he listens to what you want and comes up with lots of ideas and comments without trying to steer it in any particular direction. I gave him a very high level idea of what I was ater (fragrance, looks good all year, 'an orderly space for disorderly plants'). He really came up trumps with the design, and also gave me some good ideas on materials to use. He realised before I did that I wanted to do a lot of the planting myself but also gave me some great suggestions for architectural plants which I would not have come up with on my own. The result is a really beautiful garden which will change with the seasons but always have something of interest. I am absolutely delighted with it.

We have just finished our garden landscaping project with Peter. We are absolutely delighted with the outcome and the process. Peter's service was first class from start to finish, carrying out an initial survey, listening to our ideas, providing designs which only enhanced, improved and creatively added to our initial thoughts, dealing with a tendering process for landscape gardeners, advising us on and arranging for supply of plants, always being on hand when needed and overseeing the project from start to finish. We particularly valued Peter's creativity and sensitivity to our "vision" and budget - so that the whole process felt like a joint endeavour.

Peter created our dream garden. He came up with ideas we would never have been able to imagine. The attention to details of everything including design, electrics, planting, irrigation and materials was amazing. Would highly recommend to use Peter if you are looking for a garden designer.

Working with Peter was a real pleasure. He has created a beautiful garden for me. The garden was previously divided into sections and the back part of it had been decimated by the construction of a garden office. I knew I wanted the garden to flow and connect the house and the garden office – and I knew I wanted to use the space for informal entertaining and barbeques – but other than that, I only had a vague notion of what I wanted it to look and feel like. Peter translated those ideas into a beautiful design which has left me with a very usable and tranquil entertaining space. He drew out from me the type of things I liked and drew on the area I lived in – the old docks and the river - for inspiration. Peter’s design covered the concept, design, planting design and lighting. He wrote the spec for the quotes and was very helpful in recommending contractors. He worked with the chosen contactors to fine tune the design whist it was being built and showed a real passion for what he was creating. The planting is beautiful and it’s been great watching it all grow and come together over the last few months of lock down. Thank you for delivering a garden I will enjoy for many years.

Nearing the end of an extensive renovation to our new house, we were keen to get the largely empty garden redesigned as well. The garden is large and represented quite a challenge as it slopes away from the house steeply in places and has three large protected trees occupying a large section of it. We wanted a beautiful patio with a reflective water feature as we entertain a lot. We have young children so space for play and football was vital. The garden also needed to sit comfortably in the rural setting, but still have a ‘wow factor’. Peter visited us and took a design brief, carefully exploring exactly what we were looking for. He then came up with fantastic ideas and a gorgeous design which we were instantly delighted with. He was extremely professional and guided us through every aspect of the project. We couldn’t have found a better landscape designer to work with on this project so thank you for delivering an amazing landscape to enjoy...

Peter and his team of landscapers, have delivered a garden that dreams are made off! From the beginning of the project to the delivery of the final garden, Peter's design, explanation of budgets and the managing of our expectations were fantastic. Now it is down to Mother Nature and time to enjoy the wonderful results!

Peter has been fantastic to work with and has created a beautiful garden for our family. He really took time to listen to what we wished for our garden and made sure to include our favourite plants along with his beautiful selection. The overall design is just brilliant and has given us a garden with scope for the whole family to enjoy for many years. Peter's design covered the plant selection & lighting, a summer house, our patio and feature seating area and a wonderful play area in the style of a Pirate ship for our children. Peter Reader was an absolute pleasure to work with. As non gardeners we vaguely knew what look we wanted for our front drive and back garden but Peter's excellent designs and planting schemes exceeded all our expectations. Peter worked closely with our landscape contractor to bring his detailed plans and vision to reality. We worked with Peter in redesigning our front and rear gardens following underpinning of our house. He was very attentive in listening to what we wanted and came up with excellent designs and planting plans. He also wrote the spec for quotes and was helpful in recommending potential contractors for what was a large job and did a number of site visits to ensure that the work was done to his high standards and our expectations. Peter has a strong understanding of current environmentally friendly construction requirements as well as being able to negotiate the local regulations in HGS. Most of our planting was done in mid-summer (delayed by Covid) and we have been delighted by the way Peter's recommended (and sourced) plants have developed - they have provided to be well chosen for the plan/development/colour pallete and high quality from the nursery. We have had numerous unsolicited comments about how good our front garden looks - we get lovely feedback every time we are out there!! Peter did a terrific job of helping us with the crumbling back garden which had been neglected for many years before we bought our house. We had ideas about the structure we wanted and he turned those ideas into a wonderful garden design. We loved his attention to detail which is what makes the all the difference in the long run. Peter was recommended by a friend and has absolutely lived up to my expectations. We had only the vaguest idea of what we were trying to achieve with our small-ish London garden. It suffers with poor light because of large protected trees, was overgrown, and the design just didn't draw people out into the main garden area. As a result we simply weren't using the outdoor space even though we love to entertain. I had a minimal understanding of which plants would thrive in the various areas of light and shade, so that was also a critical part of the project. Peter's initial designs brought some very outline ideas into an absolutely wonderful concept that I immediately loved. Peter also recommended a number of contractors to quote for the work and our chosen company has also been great to work with. Following a frustrating delay due to lockdown, we are finally approaching project completion and I'm thrilled with the result. Our neglected and overgrown garden has been transformed into a contemporary space with light and movement and which has nevertheless maintained the 'woodland glade' feel I was anxious not to lose. The addition of multiple areas to sit / perch for both ourselves and guests has made such a difference. Can't wait to see the new planting flourish and to be able to welcome more friends and family into our fabulous new space...

Having battled to rein in a 'post-mature' garden every weekend for a couple of years, I realised I needed help from a professional. Possibly unusually for most of Peter’s clients, I was keen to project manage and undertake much of the labour myself. Especially as I also had a small budget, which had to be reserved for ‘hard’ costs where possible. Peter fully answered the brief by providing a clear vision with a masterplan and most crucially, has also entirely removed all the stress of my not knowing where to start. I feel like I can progress through his plans in manageable sections and actually enjoy the work, rather than see the garden as a never-ending chore. He has great attention to detail and suggested very good ideas that I hadn’t considered. In particular, the simple lighting plan, which enhances the garden hugely. This is why you need a Designer!
