Ruth grew up in Yorkshire. She graduated from Cambridge University and spent over a decade in management consulting. In 2009 she followed her passion for garden design and qualified from the English Gardening School with a distinction and was awarded the top student design prize. She set up her garden design practice in 2010. Clients value Ruth's combination of creativity and business-like approach. Ruth is a pre-registered member of the Society of Garden Designers and also sits on the commercial board of the Royal Horticultural Society supporting her wider industry. Ruth has a very visual imagination and can usually see the whole garden vision in a lot of detail in her head. She enjoys thinking about every detail with her team until it's all planned and executed to perfection. Big picture design as well as the little details matter to Ruth. We have recently worked with London based design practice (Ruth Willmott Associates) on a complex design in Dorset for a well known garden and horticultural writer. It was an exciting project with very detailed and accurate CAD drawings. There was a lot of cut and fill as well as extensive groundwork with gabion baskets on long curves, pond, limestone terracing and mature tree planting. We experienced an excellent working relationship with the designer, who was always prompt with communication and any clarification on the drawings. Their great communication with the client also enhanced the smooth running of the build. We would have no hesitation in recommending any prospective customer looking for a great garden design and professional service.

Ruth has been advising me on the redesign of a garden around a listed property in Hampstead Garden Suburb. The existing garden is in terrible shape and the design needed to work with the redesign of the property, address various drainage issues and be sensitive to the character of the house and the surrounding area. She quickly and fully understood the constraints of the brief and has proposed designs that work not just from a practical perspective but also surpassed our expectations in terms of creative use of the space and adding interest and diversity in the overall look of the garden. The implementation of the plan awaits completion of the building refurbishment project but I would not hesitate to recommend Ruth and her team from my dealings with them to date.

We had an exciting but extremely challenging project: to create a contemporary and functional garden from scratch, to fully envelop a new build in the orchard beside our Medieval Grade II listed Cotswold thatched cottage. Ruth spent many many hours at home with us ensuring she fully understood our family, our lifestyle and the context of the garden: not only for us but for our existing property and our neighbours. She has created a stunning, modern but wild design, which is completely unique yet completely in keeping with the bucolic environment. What really impressed me was her empathy, her incredible knowledge and her creative ability to be brave and bold with her suggestions, She has managed the local authority planners and suppliers (including house builders) with impressive expertise; she has fully understood our budget, and our ambition as well as our fears. Her written proposals were prescriptive, clear and concise, her bills were accurate and impeccably documented. We selected Ruth based primarily on our belief in her ability to listen to our requirements and have the vision and experience to turn a small under used garden in a terraced house into a space that enhanced our daily lives. Ruth helped select a reliable and quality conscious contractor that was a pleasure to have around and was also flexible, hard working and shared our passion for attention to detail. She was always on hand to help resolve any issues and continued to offer advice and support after completion of the project including helping source a gardener for regular maintenance. The result surpassed our high expectations. Two years later the garden still looks fabulous and enhances our lives whether we are inside looking out or relaxing in the garden itself. The garden has made the ground floor of the house feel larger due to the way the inside and outside were integrated in the design and the lighting scheme makes the garden a pleasure to look at even at night.

When I wanted help with a major garden project, one that needed to combine a fine sensitivity to place with a radical rethink of a difficult rural site, Ruth came up with a brilliantly inventive solution, offering both a crisp, bold way of dealing with space and thoughtful, delicate plantsmanship. She opened my eyes to the possibilities of my garden in such an exciting way, and I can't wait for her plans to come to fruition. She is also a joy to work with - calm, efficient, responsive, endlessly patient, and mindful of both the financial and emotional limitations of her client. I cannot recommend her too highly.

Ruth and her team have created an oasis in our little garden which is now full of interest all year round. From when the first crocuses poke up through the lawn we are treated to a changing landscape of colours and shapes as we move through the seasons. Ruth helped us to work out what we wanted with great patience and she saw the design through to the last moment. Having barely used the garden before, we are in the garden every day in warm weather and we still enjoy its beauty when it's too cold to be outside. David Wallbridge carried out the design to an excellent standard and he and his team were very pleasant to have around.
