Trusted Garden Designer | Based in Shropshire
page_type: prop_plus_profile
We are a small design studio, working closely with clients and local craftsmen, to create gardens with a long season of interest, and low maintenance requirements, fits in with the local vernacular, harmonies with the property and finished to the highest standards. The finished garden, exceeding the client’s expectations.
A mixture of native and none native plants are used to support as much wild life as possible, this has an element of education for clients; the Victorians have a lot to answer too, the majority of ‘weeds’ are a vital food source for insects, which in turn attract larger forms of wild life into the garden.
Organic principles are used; again education for the client is given, to avoid reaching for insecticides on the first sighting of green fly, rather cultural methods are used, hand picking, visual inspection rather than the kill all approach.
The choice of plants are based on a personal plant knowledge, gained from over 10 years working as Professional Gardener, plant ecology and plant layers, this is simplified below;
The plantings are layered; this can be simplified as 5 main layers,
A structural layer, trees, shrubs some perennials,
A seasonal colour layer, flowering plants, A bulbs layer,
An infill layer, self-seeding short lived perennials
A summer dormant layer, perennials which natural go dormant over the summer.
By using this layering technique a natural planting with a long season of interest (plant and leaf shape, with colour from flowers), is formed, the density of plants used, cover bare soil therefore reducing maintenance time. This plant choice is match closely to the surrounding plant arch-type (woodland, woodland edge, meadows etc) this ensures the garden fits with in the local vernacular.

Stuart Francis of Square Foot Garden Design has been working with us for several years to develop our 1/4 acre cottage garden, set in the natural surroundings of the Welsh Marches with views across the Ceiriog Valley near Offa's Dyke. From the outset Stuart has shown himself to be a hard-working, insightful garden designer who is sensitive to the needs of his client and the characteristics of the local ecology and landscape. He is very knowledgeable about plants, aware of the impact of climate change and is constantly developing his knowledge and professional skills. At an early stage in our relationship he drew up a detailed plan of the garden which has been the basis of all his subsequent work. He will often ask us questions about what we would like to see, listens carefully to our answers and offers suggestions. He takes account of our current stock and moves plants around to take advantage of changing conditions. Our own ideas have changed over time of course, eg during the Covid crisis we have grown more vegetables, and he has been very responsive to those changes. He has brought in Matt to work with him on the more routine tasks, which has worked very well. It has been a pleasure to work with Stuart and we can recommend him highly.

Stuart is an excellent gardener. He has taken professional courses and is very knowledgeable about plants and the conditions they need to thrive. We have had invaluable advice on planning and design. Stuart can deal with everything from designing borders in a tricky environment, advice on suppliers and planting and weeding. Fully recommended.

My wife and I were introduced to Stuart about eighteen months ago when we were searching for design and planting assistance for our new Garden.
Stuart has a vast plant knowledge, has great ideas and his services are very reasonably priced.
He introduced us to a layer planting philosophy that provides successional and continuous colour and interest throughout the year.
We were very happy with his service and can’t recommend him enough.

Stuart is friendly, competent, hardworking, knowledgeable yet always keen to know more about our more unusual plants. He is willing to do basic gardening work, and has the strength and commitment to make major changes to shrubbery and weed patches in record time. But also, he is a garden designer and has completely transformed part of our garden by turning our vague wish to have "a gravel garden here", pointing to yet another overgrown corner of the garden, into a really thoroughly dug and delivered gravel garden with style. And it fits really well into its surroundings. He listens to ideas and makes his own planting suggestions but if, as in our case, we have quite strong views an amicable agreement is reached. For other clients I am sure he could be relied upon to produce an effective planting to suit the garden and its locality.
Highly recommended.

Stuart took our garden from nothing literally to the beautiful garden it is today .
Designed from scratch and planted from scratch .
Our garden is now an oasis for lots of different species of birds , bees , butterfly etc .
The clever planting that Stuart has done means we have colour in our garden all year round . The garden changes week on week with different plants in flower .
Stuart has looked after our garden (s) for over 6 years now and continues to do an excellent job .
Can highly recommend him and his business .
