My Company designs and makes unique staircases, handrails and architectural features for private clients. Our mission is to enhance our clients homes or workplaces by creating exquisitely detailed and realised pieces and transform the spaces they sit in.
In 2019 we declared a Climate Emergency and accordingly modified our business model to reflect the crisis. From this date we sought to only undertake commissions in south west and west London to minimise travel distances. We also strategically plan each project to minimise its carbon footprint. Each project is 'weighed' to demonstrate its low carbon budget.
We combine wood, metal, glass and unusual materials into functional sculpture. We are skilled in managing the interfaces between materials with different characteristics. Exceptional aesthetics and spatial composition are at the centre of our vision.
I am Robert Steer and as creative director I split my time between designing and making. I have been interested in building design, construction and materials all my life and read architecture and construction at degree level, eventually after spending a decade working in architecture I set up my company. Over several years I have carefully built up a committed team of designers and makers. I have selected each person for their honesty, expertise and focus.
My passion is the design and coordination of ideas and materials to make interesting and well articulated functional pieces for the home and work place. I am particularly enthusiastic about innovative solutions to the design brief that exceed the clients expectations. My company approaches each new project with an open mind and no pre conceived concept of how we will the piece will be designed. Its exciting to work with clients to find out what they really desire and then to make it for them.
Project costs are proposed then evaluated for each project. Generally to design and make an architectural staircase or balustrade project costs start at around £20k + vat, other specialist items can only be estimated and costed as the design is developed because of their bespoke nature.
All projects begin with a conversation so if you have an idea that you would like to discuss in further detail then please do get in contact or you can read more about my work on social media or visit my website www.robsteer.co.uk.

Robbie is a craftsman who really cares about the quality of this work and importantly is prepared to keep working with the clients to make sure it is really what is wanted - I am quite a particular person myself and Robbie was always keen to spend time discussing and to take on board my thoughts and ideas.
He also spent a long time taking in aspects of the rest of our house and our style before coming up with his initial design.
He really cares about his craftsmanship and he spent a lot of time and effort on ensuring the execution was high quality. We are very happy with the final staircase.

I first contacted Robert having seen his profile on the Houzz website to discuss modifications to my staircase balustrade and handrail. I was very impressed with Robert's design creativity and knowledge in the use of different materials in the build and decided to hire Robert because he understood exactly what I was looking for and would custom make everything for a unique end product.
Work started very shortly after agreeing the final design and it was evident that Robert hand his team are very skilled with their carpentry and construction work. For each visit, they were very punctual and left my place clean and tidy afterwards. Every stage of the project was managed closely by Robert with regular communication. Robert was very hands on during the entire build and his attention to detail meant that the end result met all my expectations and looked spectacular when completed.
If you are looking to build a new staircase or renovate or modify at an affordable price, I highly recommend Robert as somebody who can provide that design flair and is a very friendly to work with. I have already started discussing new projects with Robert and look forward to working with him again.
