About Us

Hello. I am John. Oh! Sit Down is my upholstery workshop nestled in the Yorkshire Wolds. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my Mum upholstering and working with furniture: In the cubby under the stairs in her old house (her original 'workshop'!); cramming a battered drop-arm Chesterfield into the back of our Fiat Uno; proudly making buttons for her - my first proper job - and the satisfying WHACK sound of the button press as it cut and squidged together fabric and shiny backs. I remember twine and calico and hessian and cambric and luxuriating in the sounds of the words. Now a proper actual grown up, I'm lucky enough to be able to create furniture myself. I still love making buttons the most. On this site and on my Insta you will find examples of my work, the occasional finished piece for sale, and some inevitable chair-related silliness. Each unique piece of furniture I create starts with a conversation: a conversation with the owner of the bottom which will sit in it. So get in touch and let's see if we can get that bottom of yours sorted. J x.
