Town garden, Haslemere, Surrey

This garden was created in answer to my clients' brief to design an outdoor space with an open feel, but which had shape and structure all year round. They particularly wanted a large outdoor entertaining area with a structure to provide some shade in the summer. They also wanted to incorporate a water feature, a herb garden, a compost area and lighting into the scheme. Although the house is traditional in style, the clients have modern tastes so the design needed to work on both levels

A large oak pergola has been planted with a vine to provide shade during the summer months. Planting around the terrace softens the hard landscaping. Photo : Janet Bligh Garden Designs

The oak pergola frames the view of the rear garden when you approach from the front garden. The existing Wisteria is being trained over the pergola to create shade. Lights attached to the pergola illuminate the dining space. Picture credit: Janet Bligh Garden Designs

A small space has been created amongst a large curving border to enjoy the late afternoon sun. My clients' dogs have a large enough space to run around and generally cause mischief. PIcture credit : Janet Bligh Garden Designs

Water falls from the raised pool into a sunken pool which sits just below the terrace level. With lighting in the pool which illuminates the water fall, this provides a focal point from both inside and outside the house, in daylight and also at night. Picture credit : Janet Bligh Garden Designs

A single step up to the terrace with step lights built into the riser. These cast a beam of light over the gravel surfacing onto the herb beds. Picture credit : Janet Bligh Garden Designs
