Using this idea of a floating, supported shelf - this could be a buffet shelf in a small dining room. it could double as a desk. storage cubes underneath that double as seats. this could even have a drawer in it (actually 2 or 3 drawers). This would be an interesting DIY project for the kind of dining room that's typical in the MCM houses I'm looking at.
