Alcove cupboards and shelving improved storage and a low seat with a sheepskin rug was used to create a cosy reading corner.
This is an example of a small contemporary enclosed living room in Hertfordshire with a reading nook, white walls, light hardwood flooring, a standard fireplace, a brick fireplace surround, a wall mounted tv, brown floors, exposed beams, brick walls and a chimney breast.

This intimate fireplace moment brings texture, contrast, and tradition together in one elegantly understated vignette. A cast iron wood-burning stove sits within a recessed red brick fireplace, its gothic-arched detailing adding a subtle nod to period craftsmanship.
Beneath it, a matt patterned tiled hearth adds a layer of visual interest and soft ornamentation, while flanking accessories — including a brushed iron fireplace tool set and a vintage copper log bucket with brass lion-footed legs — reinforce the room’s grounded, timeless character.
Above, a large circular white-framed mirror anchors the composition, offering visual symmetry and light reflection while balancing the fireplace’s darker materials. Together, these elements form a central point in the home that feels welcoming, curated, and effortlessly classic.

The ground floor was originally made up of a number of small, pokey, dark rooms. Removing some of the ground floor walls has opened up the interior to create a beautiful large living space suitable for modern day living.
The entire cottage is bright, warm and cosy, with many of the rooms featuring original carpentry and exposed brickwork.

This new build architectural gem required a sensitive approach to balance the strong modernist language with the personal, emotive feel desired by the clients.
Taking inspiration from the California MCM aesthetic, we added bold colour blocking, interesting textiles and patterns, and eclectic lighting to soften the glazing, crisp detailing and linear forms. With a focus on juxtaposition and contrast, we played with the ‘mix’; utilising a blend of new & vintage pieces, differing shapes & textures, and touches of whimsy for a lived in feel.

The existing property was a Victorian Abrahams First Floor Apartment with 2 bedrooms.
The proposal includes a loft extension with two bedrooms and a shower room, a rear first floor roof terrace and a full refurbishment and fit-out.
Our role was for a full architectural services including planning, tender, construction oversight. We collaborated with specialist joiners for the interior design during construction.
The client wanted to do something special at the property, and the design for the living space manages that by creating a double height space with the eaves space above that would otherwise be dead-space or used for storage.
The kitchen is linked to the new terrace and garden as well as the living space creating a great flor to the apartment.
The master bedroom looks over the living space with shutters so it can also be closed off.
The old elements such as the double height chimney breast and the new elements such as the staircase and mezzanine contrast to give more gravitas to the original features.
