Emergence
During the epoch, essential foundations were put in place to provide the generators of our landscapes, their inhabitants and the interrelationships between them. Emergence is an expression of this creative time; symbolised through the emerging granite Stone as the genesis and ‘spirit’ of the design. Stone is the centre; the datum; the beginnings of this interconnected landscape, and the convergence of relationships between its materials, distinct planting, water, artwork, and mood lighting and misting. Valuable and profound Indigenous understandings about landscapes and their sustaining and seasonal relationships are acknowledged through Fish (Lin Onus, 1991-represented in glass). Escarpment (represented in glass) not only tributes the extent of this knowledge through subtle but present fish fossils, but also completes this garden as an integrated system through the continuity of granite, and presents the notion of secluded waterholes nourishing life.

The client wanted to make more practical use of their sizeable garden by building a patio to replace the existing gravel and concrete area. To improve the aesthetics and square off the area, an existing fence was moved in line with the garage wall before the area was cleared and levelled. The patio was split into two areas with the part accessed by patio doors being raised by means of a brick step. Black Indian Limestone was chosen and the patio edged with setts of the same stone. An old concrete path was removed from the bottom of the garden and an area cleared and levelled ready for a smaller patio to be built using the same stone but given a curved front edge leading onto the lawn. All patios were pointed with Mushroom Easy Joint before being sealed to enhance and protect the stone.
A raised circular timber edged area was constructed and covered with playbark to house the trampoline in the opposite corner at the bottom of the garden.
The boundary fences were cleared of overgrown ivy and planting borders weeded with shrubs pruned back, giving the garden a cleaner more spacious feel.

This project was a ground floor flat which the clients were looking to convert from a two bedroom to a three bedroom flat with a new rear extension. The clients wanted something simple and elegant with a minimalist feel. We worked with Mullroy Architects in Crouch End to help create this beautiful and contemporary home.
