He also encouraged us to have a 'green roof' on our single storey extension which worked out very well and gives us a great view from our bedroom. Nov 2023, we completed our L-Shaped extension and Stephen was our architect who we would very highly recommend. On meeting Stephen we instantly knew he would be the right architect for us. He understood our requirements and visions and presented us with many options whilst still keeping in mind our budget. Wasn't sure whether we needed an Architect for our loft conversion. So many companies are a one stop shop that offer to do do the whole lot so spending the little bit extra could seem like a luxury. Having used an Architect and seen other peoples lofts that didn't, I know we did the right thing. Steve did a brilliant job and what we've ended up getting is so much more than an extra room. We love spending time in our new space and it's changed our home life immensely. Simple things like using windows that are maybe a bit bigger than the builders would have put in by default, more interesting details here and there and making sure that the space really gave us what we needed have made such a difference. This was the second ‘self build’ my wife and I have taken on and I therefore consider we are in a good position to recommend Steve’s services which have been second to none. From our initial meeting and throughout the build Steve was always available to promptly help and advise in a friendly and professional manner. Steve was the architect for the work we did in our house, which lasted for 6 months. He did all the initial drawings, which got approved straight away. We also decided to continue to work with him to project managed and administer the contract with the builders: which was the best decision we made. Throughout the process, Steve was very professional, had great ideas to design the space in our house, and always found solutions to overcome unexpected challenges we faced during the building process. Having worked with Steve on two previous projects, one a large workplace extension and then an extension on my last house, I knew I wanted Steve to design my retirement house. It took me a year to find the land and another year to finalise the design and then get planning, and now another year and a half to complete the build. I’m thrilled! The house is beautiful, meets all my needs and Steve has been there every step of the way. He’s managed the build, liaised with planning depts, kept a strict eye on finance etc etc. He’s brilliant and creative and I know I wouldn’t have been able to go through this without him. Steve was recommended by my colleague who had a bigger project in previous year. Steve helped us as our architect and project manager of our Semi detached house's ground floor rear extension. He is organised, efficient and gave us a lot of advise to enable us to be able to create a vision where we had no idea how to start. Planning permission stage went smoothly and moved to build work stage in March. Unfortunately we had to put the project on hold just 1.5 week after the start of build work for 3 weeks due to COVID lockdown. After the project re-started, there was no major issues nor concerns throughout project and Steve coordinated the details with builders, window company etc for us behind the scenes. The project completed based on the revised schedule plan. We are very happy with the results and would definitely work with him again on any project we might have in future.

Steve worked for me on my kitchen extension in SE London. He is very friendly, approachable but professional in his work. The design, planning and tender were fairly straightforward but the build came unstuck when my builder’s company collapsed and shortly afterwards the Covid 19 virus came along, delaying the project by some months. None of the above was Steve’s fault and he was able, under these difficult circumstances, to see the project to completion and to keep to the budget. I couldn’t have done this without Steve, I am delighted with the results which incorporate some clever features thanks to Steve’s vision at the design stage.

Steve developed the the plans for us to seek permitted development from Planning for a conversion. He explained everything clearly, took our requirements into consideration, was very flexible and made the process easy for us.

When looking for an architect we were looking for an experienced and creative architect who could take our relatively well-formed ideas and take them from concept into reality. Steve did this, and then some. The vision he formed enhanced our original designs significantly and we found ourselves coming up with “new ideas” throughout the process only to find that Steve had suggested them earlier. He takes the time to understand the brief, and then enhances it in a way that will deliver an improved outcome. Steve designed a double-storey side return, loft conversion and single storey rear extension with a triangular gable over glass sliding doors. The design of the rear extension in particular far surpassed our expectations. Steve understands the planning process so well that he was able to advise us on what would and wouldn’t get through planning and thus we tailored the plans accordingly. One stand-out moment saw us being advised that plans would not be approved due to being so close to the boundary at the first floor - Steve took this opportunity to design the side wall/roof in an imaginative way that enhances the relationship between the front and rear of the house. Steve continued to help us when tendering and identifying contractors which was made more complex due to our budgetary constraints which meant we had to remove some items from the contract in order to increase affordability. Steve’s patience and advice during this process was unending, and very much appreciated. We ultimately found a contractor who executed Steve’s designs really well with Steve administering the contract for us. We were unsure whether we required this aspect of his services, but with hindsight would have really struggled without his wisdom, guidance and experience given the complexity of the changes. Regrettably we had a number of issues with our both the glazing company as well as the main contractor towards the end of the build that Steve not only helped us to navigate but used his experience to bring about largely favourable outcomes, even in extremely trying circumstances. On a personal level, Steve is fantastic to work with: he is swift to reply to questions and always returns phone calls; he is reliable and sticks to schedules and promises; he is a man of great integrity. I have recommended Steve to multiple friends and colleagues and will continue to do so. Not only is Steve an incredible architect, but he’s the best professional we dealt with throughout the 18 month process from concept and design through to reality. A first class man delivering a first class service.

As a young family looking for a single storey extension with no previous experience of building work, Steve proved the ideal architect in introducing us to the process and guiding us through some of the major decisions we had to make. He struck a good balance between being receptive to our thoughts and suggesting alternatives that made us think differently. He produced detailed plans and schedule of works (that builders appreciated when we went through the tendering process) and actually his recommendations were the builders & engineer we ended up going with! Really glad that we chose Steve to work with on our extension project. Steve came up with an excellent design, and guided us through the the planning process which felt stress free. Steve showed a great deal of patience dealing with my indecisiveness, and steered me away from daft ideas. His drawings were of high quality, and he contacted a number of suppliers to provide quotes for glazing, polished concrete, and lighting systems. Steve did a fantastic job with the drawings for my quite complicated flat extension due to the height and weights etc. He went the extra mile in sourcing solutions and keeping the costs down and listened to my requests (and didn't mind tweaking plans with my feedback). I'd recommend.

We live in a bungalow on a corner plot and wanted to knock down the old double garage and adjoining porch and extend sideways roughly doubling the floor plan of the main building. We met with a few different architects but didn’t feel they really understood our vision until we met Steve. He took on board our grand ideas and made them achievable, helping balance material costs against our budget without compromising on the critical aspects of the design. During this stage Steve was patient with us as we came up with new ideas, iterated quickly on the drawings and helped with our kitchen layout which joins the two floor levels and angles. Although our first planning application was rejected due to complications with our location, Steve was proactive in contacting the council to discuss acceptable solutions such that our next application was approved. We weren’t sure initially whether to hire Steve for phase 3 of project management to save on costs. Having not done anything like this before, we decided it was going to be complex enough (e.g. combined flat and vaulted ceilings, different ground floor levels, large openings) that we would benefit from his experience. This was absolutely the right move. Due to issues with window supply and the contractors our project has lasted twice as long as estimated. Extending your home is already stressful without any complications; having Steve manage the project, making sure delays were minimised and caring about the small details as if it were his own home has definitely helped us cope with our day jobs while living on a building site. It’s very easy to overreact to issues thinking it’s Doomsday; being able to call/email Steve to get his perspective and do a reality check was immensely valuable. Throughout the entire time Steve has worked with integrity and always been fair to both us and the contractors. We now have a lovely home that we are very happy with and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services.

Steve oversaw, designed and applied for planning permission of our loft conversion as well as our kitchen extension. Steve was a fantastic partner throughout the process of designing our loft conversion and renovation, though builder selection, construction, and snagging at the end. He was adept at identifying where our real priorities lay, and providing a wider range of options on those key items while offering great quality budget-aware choices on areas which were important but not our main focus. The core goals of the build were to get a lot more light into the kitchen and space in the form of a loft, and we couldn't be happier with having achieved both of those. We ended up with so much more value day-to-day by hiring him than we ever expected, and the biggest differences really come in how deftly he turned awkward spaces into excellent features. We have a few difficult spots around radiators or under the stairs and he made those into features we love every day and our guests comment on regularly.

We asked Mitchell Architecture Studio to design our loft conversion and rear extension after coming up with preliminary plans ourselves which we thought were pretty good until coming here. Steve completely re-designed the spaces to a very high quality and well thought out use of space which we never considered doing. Stephen was commissioned to design the plans, achieve planning permission and oversee the project through to completion. What he did really well was: . 1. Thoughtful ideas which made a difference to the outcome. He had better ideas than other architects and really added to how our extension finished. E.g. internal exposed brick wall which ran the whole length of our garden externally enhancing our "indoors - outdoors" feel. It also made our small garden feel a little longer. 2. Took responsibility for the builder and the project. There were a few occasions when the builders didn't build to the exact specifications. He visited regularly and he ensured that the builders corrected the build to meet our design. We definitely wouldn't have picked up on these points. 3. Engaging and responsive. Stephen was always on the end of the phone or email helping us through the process. His ability to form a good working relationship with not just us but the builder really helped keep our project on track. His level of communication throughout was thorough.

We employed Stephen to produce architectural plans for a double storey extension on our 3 bed semi, and put them through planning for us. We brought our house in 2015 with existing planning permission for a material (1,000sqft) first floor extension to a 1930's bungalow with 1970's extension. We were unhappy with the existing plans that were in place and following a recommendation from our building contractor we mandated Steve to undertake a complete redesign of the entire extension incorporating the modernisation and redesign of the existing building. From our initial meeting, Steve showed great passion and vision for the project. He listened carefully to our thoughts and the issues that we had with the original designs. To save cost/time, he liaised with the original architect in order to get the original CAD plans and set about incorporating our wishes and his vision into new plans/drawings. The results were much more in keeping with what we wanted and with further consultation and some minor redrafts we finally had the final plans to move for a new planning permission. Steve also managed the planning submission process which went through on time and as planned. We did not engage Steve to undertake the project management of the subsequent build. However, after undertaking such a material project on our own, we would not hesitate to recommend Steve taking on these additional services. Trying to work and manage a family is difficult enough without project managing a material buidling project! From the word 'go' Steve was the consumate professional. He made us feel at ease very quickly and his passion for the project was infectious. Whilst there were a number of design elements that he may have preferred himself, he always listened to what we wanted rather than dictate his own thoughts and agenda. In many respects we felt that this was a great collaboration and Steve was very helpful in giving his own professional advice and opinions for consideration, whether we adopted them or not. Now that the build is complete, we could not be happier in our 'new' home. The design is fresh, modern and ties together three generations of building seamlessly. On a full extension to the side and rear on 2 levels they provided a full set of drawings detailing various services and also a set of structural drawings together with a full specification covering the whole project .They were helpful , knowledgable and flexible , listening to our ideas whilst also dealing with/ liasing with all contractors in a professional manner.

Steve Mitchell designed an extension for my house a little over a year ago in Horsham and it has transformed my home. He really listened to what I needed and had lots of great ideas about the space and how it could be used. The builder was really impressed with the drawings because they were so detailed. Steve oversaw the whole process, negotiating with the builders and managing the project from start to finish. He also designed a piece of furniture to be installed in the extension which I needed to hold art materials and provide drawing space. Again beautifully done.

Steve was brilliant to work with. He got what we were wanting to achieve and came back with some initial thoughts that perfectly captured the contemporary aesthetic we were looking for in our loft extension. From that point onwards he was patient an helpful as we navigated some of the practical challenges, including planning permissions and the limitations of our budget. He then created the bid document and helped us manage the bidding process. The build is now close to completion as planned and he has been on site on several occasions to help us ensure the builders adhere to the original vision.

Steve not only produced a beautiful design for my balcony but helped me deal with the council and the builders. He was ever on hand with advice and recommendations...this covered an extended time period.... for never more than his original fee. I felt in very safe hands throughout.
