Musk or Alba?
Hey everyone! I usually post in the cottage garden forum but I have a rose-specific question I hope some of you can help me with.
I have the need for a climbing/rambling rose for my front porch. I will include the picture below so you can get a pretty good idea of where it's going, etc. It will be going in between the two bushes (growing up around the middle beam). On the other side of the porch which you cannot see, I already planted a dutchman's pipe.
Also, it needs to be shade tolerant. Right now, it gets 4-6 hours of sun, but in about 5-10 years when the oak starts taking off, it will only get 2-4 hours. It's an east facing porch.
I have narrowed my choices down to a musk rose (Paul's Himalayan Musk) on heirloomroses.com, or an alba (Mme. Plantier) on roguevalleyroses.com
Any thoughts on this? I do understand that alba roses are quite tolerant of shade, not completely sure about the musk roses though. I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on the matter! FYI, the height from the ground to the top of the porch is about 15 or so feet. I would trim the spirea back hard to make a spot for the rose. Here's the pic: (We are still painting so excuse the ugliness of the railing and masonry for the portch!).
