Need rug ideas

My little living room has a lot left to be desired, but with 3 small children it is pointless to buy new sofas etc until they grow out of spilling things and so forth. Now, the challenge is to find a nice rug, which is suitable for high traffic and adaptable to the occasional spills. The current rug was cosy and soft, but is a magnet for food and crumbs and I hate it now! Any suggestions please and tips on suitable rugs for high usage area with small children. Thanks.

    love the colour of your sofa!! I would suggest a grey carpet, all over the floor. personally would have changed the colour of the walls to a light rose, pomengranate like, that goes with the sofas, and would have changed the curtains. good luck with the small changes till the children grow. :)

    Thank you...it's nice to hear something positive about our corner sofa that can't be true to itself due to the lack of space. Actually we're in rented accommodation so can't change the carpet - if I had my way I'd replace it with wooden flooring - and the carpet is irrevocably stained all over so a rug is the only current affordable option to hide this...

    Have you tried Ikea? There are a selection of low pile stain resistant rugs that will pull your colour scheme together.

    Following on from grosco's great suggestion, look for a low pile rather than a flatwoven rug. On a carpet, a flatwoven will crease and wrinkle and could posing a tripping hazard. I thought something like this might work instead...

    Yes low pile and patterned are best for hiding any marks. You can also get machine washable rugs. I bought a jute rug as I had heard they are good at disguising any marks and that is true, but mine is quite thick and holds on to so much dust and crumbs in all the crevices, I have to regularly put it on the washing line and beat it with a stick because hoovering just doesn't cut it.
