We have recently purchased a new build with wet undlerfloor heating throughout, also a bungalow. We have engineered wood floor (floating) through whole house except for ensuite and bathroom which are ceramic tile. It does give a lovely even heat and you have the flexibility to control each room individually. You are correct that it is not super quick to respond because it is heating such a large surface area but this is not something I have found to be a problem at all. It only really gets moved up and down about 3 degress anyway. We have our bedroom very low because we like a cool room and this works well. Our house is 4 bedroom, approx 136 sqm and at the moment our heating and electric is working out at about £70 a month (this is for everything, no gas or anything on top of this) however, we do have airsource heat pump which adds further to efficiency of the heating. Also, if it is useful, the cost for us of the UFH installation was about £5500 but this was in new build and not retrofit. If you have a well insulated house I would go for it! :)

Trying to be unbiased....lol.... Check your ceiling heights, underfloor often is a great option if you have lower ceilings and good insulation but in Victorian properties with 3m high ceilings for example, underfloor is unlikely to meet the heat output require. Also bear in mind reaction times, underfloor takes hours rather than minutes to heat up so you should have it on all the time in theory even if just on low. My parents have a Victorian house and have electric underfloor in their basement kitchen/diner, but have a small vertical radiator with hooks on for tea towels and a traditional style column radiator as well. They have the radiators on most of the time as per their central heating programming but they "turn the floor on" when they are planning on doing loads of laundry or its really cold (like today!); it does really speed up drying times. It definitely feels nice having it under the tiles They don't have it on all the time as it is expensive to run. So if you are doing the whole house and decide to go with underfloor, I would definitely try and go for the central heating underfloor as the running costs would be very expensive if electric.

When we moved into our house we turned off the monumentally expensive electric UFH that the previous owner had running 24/7/365 in our large open plan kitchen,dining living. British Gas demanded an engineer be sent to view our meter within a month as they had decided that we, the new owners, must have broken or bypassed the electric meter to get free power as the meter was no longer spinning like a top! We now have good old central heating radiators installed - when we put these in we found the foam insulation for the electric UFH was burnt in some areas where the previous owners had sofas and furniture that sat close to the floor! We love the warmth in the room now, the fact that you can warm yourself by a radiator after a cold trip outside and the slowly turning electric meter!

Regardless of what finish you choose, the thing with wet UFH is that it relies on heat building up in and being stored in the floor slab. You don’t really ever turn it off in the winter, you just set the room thermostats for different temperatures at different times of the day. In the summer you just set the thermostat to frost setting so it never kicks in. We have tiles and I like having a cool floor in the summer heat, as do my dogs. In autumn and spring other finishes may feel more cosy as sometimes the tiled floor doesn’t feel obviously warm when the air is up to temp, tho it’s not properly cold either.
