Underfloor heating or Central heating

Hey Guys,

I need some advise.. Is under floor heating for me???

I would without hesitation install UFH on my ground floor during my up and
coming house refurbishment. However I am questioning this because we only spend
12 hours at home during the evenings (Mon-Fri). And I think, with the time it takes
to heat up, its almost not worth me having it.. What would you say to this?

We installed tile in our entryway, bath and laundry, but did not put in heating. Regret it ever since. I think that since tile isn't easily replaced it is worth the extra expense and an added feature for resale. I was under the impression that it only takes a few minutes to warm up, but that would probably depend on the brand.

Interesting read and a good point you made which I think I need to find the answer....

For all the folks that have UFH, how long does it take to heat the room?

I don't know where you're located but we installed warmly yours electric heat under the tile in our guest baths and in our bar that are on a concrete floor in our lower level. We love them and are planning on doing it in our master bath when we remodel in a few years. Zones and thermostat controlled. They were easy for our tile guy to layout, order, and install and don't take up any height so there is no transition to a slightly higher floor. Just my experience. Have you considered Air to Air heating units for specific rooms within the house which you will want heated more than others? The Stanley unit will provide a single temperature throughout the house, even in rooms you aren't using. The A2A units are placed in specific, high usage, rooms, feature detection sensors to save power and clean the air they use to the highest level available domestically. We have recently purchased a new build with wet undlerfloor heating throughout, also a bungalow. We have engineered wood floor (floating) through whole house except for ensuite and bathroom which are ceramic tile. It does give a lovely even heat and you have the flexibility to control each room individually. You are correct that it is not super quick to respond because it is heating such a large surface area but this is not something I have found to be a problem at all. It only really gets moved up and down about 3 degress anyway. We have our bedroom very low because we like a cool room and this works well. Our house is 4 bedroom, approx 136 sqm and at the moment our heating and electric is working out at about £70 a month (this is for everything, no gas or anything on top of this) however, we do have airsource heat pump which adds further to efficiency of the heating. Also, if it is useful, the cost for us of the UFH installation was about £5500 but this was in new build and not retrofit. If you have a well insulated house I would go for it! :)

When we moved into our house we turned off the monumentally expensive electric UFH that the previous owner had running 24/7/365 in our large open plan kitchen,dining living. British Gas demanded an engineer be sent to view our meter within a month as they had decided that we, the new owners, must have broken or bypassed the electric meter to get free power as the meter was no longer spinning like a top! We now have good old central heating radiators installed - when we put these in we found the foam insulation for the electric UFH was burnt in some areas where the previous owners had sofas and furniture that sat close to the floor! We love the warmth in the room now, the fact that you can warm yourself by a radiator after a cold trip outside and the slowly turning electric meter!

When we had it, it made a difference to the room temperature very quickly. Within minutes of it turing on the room temperature became more comfortable. I would love to have it again.
