Kitchen wall colour help!

Hi all,

So, I've chosen Dulux cornflower white for my kitchen, which has to go with older fitted units, work tops and tiling. Our tester patch was much less blue than how it looks now we're in the midst of painting the whole room, and I don't know whether to give up on it or if it might look okay once it's all painted up. Advice/opinions welcome please!

My gut feeling is that it's too blue, especially in areas in shadow, but I don't know what colour might work better so any suggestions would be fab please!

Photos 2 and 3 show the same area, no. 2 is when it's sunny, no.3 is when it's overcast outside or in the evening with artificial light. And the piece of worktop you can see in the pictures is exactly the same colour as the kitchen units/doors.

If the tiles are staying then the paint doesn't work. You need a more cream / linen coloured neutral. Cornflower is a definite blue.

Update - alabaster painted oak units, oak worktop, (curved end units and worktop corners) belfast sink, 1100 stainless steel rangemaster porcelain large high gloss ivory 600x600 floor tiles, ivory grout - please see attached look book just still to decide on shade of sage on walls - deciding between F&B Mizzle, Vert De Terre, Ball Green and Cooking Apple Green... Also metro sub/way tiles on walls - whether to go for a sage tile or cream/white... The dining room area off the kitchen will have oak parquet floor which will follow through from hall and will also be in the lounge but Im thinking of following the wall colour in the kitchen through to the dining room for continuity and potentially painting the chimney brest or wall furthest away from and facing the kitchen a darker green complementary colour... Thoughts please

Ooo that looks a great possibility. There are two undertones to this colour green and grey. I'd say green complimenting the cupboards and grey the work tops. Lots of colour testing to do on paper once I have the flooring sample and it laid. Yes I definitely need dark accessories. I was going with copper as I am going to have two pendant lights over the breakfast bar. Do you all think copper as the accessory colour would work? I am having an oak kitchen door and dining table with an oak bench. Seating area I was thinking paint a light colour but reupholster with a dark blue shade (now decided from your advice) and then tile the inside of the log fire background in a patterned dark blue tile? Hi Cath, You really have a lot of choice of colour that you could use in these 2 rooms. Can I recommend that you perhaps do some online research on colour consultants that could work with you to find the colour that works for you and your family, rather than get bogged down with looking at pictures online/pinterest/instagram. Hi everyone, I’m new to Houzz and we just moved into a partially finished renovation project last Friday. We have a lovely kitchen diner with a grey kitchen - dark grey cupboards, grey tiles marble work surface and grey laminate. My husband and I are having discussions trying to choose a paint colour to go with the kitchen but not be too dark in the living room bit. You need Farrow & Ball - Pointing if you want a lovely warm white. If you can't find the real thing, go to B&Q and get them to colour match it for you (they should have a Farrow & Ball colour chart in-store) - get the Valspar premium though...

Thank you both very much. We originally went for cornflower white as it appeared to just have a very tiny hint of grey-blue, and we were trying to continue the theme from our lounge which has just been decorated in 'sea mist' by johnstones (grey-duck egg colour, brilliant white woodwork with calico/dirty cream furnishings, and F&B elephants breath coloured linen style curtains).

Evidently this attempt hasn't worked though! We didn't find any warm whites that didn't look too yellow when we were doing our (very limited) research, so I'll have to have another hunt around.

Thanks vansoire14, I've looked up F&B pointing, however as always on the Internet the shade appears quite varied in appearance so I'll dig out my F&B colourchart and see if I can get a tester.

Our aim with the room is to create a calm space with hints towards vintage/retro and -accessories in natural colours/textures. We also don't want the room to look too sparse or bright in the morning (it's south facing with a large window so is flooded with light all morning. We did have brilliant white in there for a little while as a base after plastering but that seemed too clinical and stark compared to the rich wood veneer kitchen and dappled tiles. Our kitchen although from the 80s, has intergrated stainless steel handles and looks a bit like the some of the German brand kitchens. I like vintage anyway, hence why we're keeping the kitchen and tiles.

How about something with a pinky undertone, to pick up the brown of the tiles and units. F and b skimming stone or slipper satin?

Can you paint the tiles? I've done this before and it came out quite well as a compromise to replacing them. I like the blue, but I'm not sure it really works with the tiles.

Shjuly71 - we quite like the tiles as they're enkeeping with kitchen/house, although they are proving to be the issue really regarding the cornflower white.

I went on a trip out for testers and to nosey about all the colour charts again this morning and have results as follows;

F&B 'skimming stone' out - too orangey/modern beigey looking against tiles

F&B 'pointing' out - too yellowy against tiles

Found 'white mist' by Dulux (a bit like F&B 'wevet' but slightly less pinky) which is complimentary to the kitchen but I think it might look too cold /stark if painted all over walls

I then stared at the F&B colour chart for a while and have seen 'lime white', 'off white', 'old white', and 'slipper satin' (no tester of slipper satin in shop earlier).

What do you all think? I'm not sure how true the swatches are to the painted up colours but maybe a start?

From the photos off white and lime white look best to me. I don't know how well f&b paints work in kitchens as I've never dared to use them places you might have to wash down! My go to paint for kitchens and bathrooms is 'milk white' from crown, which looks quite similar to the ones you've got there. It works well with beige/brown tiles, but also has a bluish undertone which brightens the room in our northern light.

Have a look at White Cotton Endurance by Dulux it has a slight grey undertone. Hope this helps.

Hi, thank you for your comments. We're still struggling to find the right shade so I'll look those two colours up.

My sister does have her whole house painted in milk white and it looked beautiful the last time I visited, but her house is an open plan new build with a very neutral kitchen and flooring so I'll have to see how it'd look with our kitchen and tiles.

I've been looking for a very light grey with just a tiny hint of beige this evening, in the hope that the beige element will tie into colour of the tiles, but the grey will make our kitchen units/worktop pop, and it's my preferred colour for the room if I wasn't trying to find something to go with the existing kitchen. I have yet to find the shade that is in my head. Can anyone think of any please?

All farrow and ball colours are out, I even called them up and they couldn't suggest any of their colours after me sending over a picture and telling them what we'd already tried! We tried shadow white today before that, and it looks like a very sandy beige with green undertones that doesn't go well with the tiles or the worktop/doors.

Have a look at paints from

the little Greene , they are similarly high in pigment to f&b and similarly priced . With a broader colour range and paint types that will work in kitchens and bathrooms.

sanderson paints are also good. with an enormous range of colours.
