2d 3d residential remodelling software

Can anyone recommend an easy to use (preferably laptop based) software that I can use to thrash out some ideas I have around remodelling and extending the ground floor of my house? Im reasonably happy to pay a small fee to get what i need, but free would be better!

To be honest it all dispense on needs if its for professional designs or just to play around. We are currently using two design software: Autodesk 3ds Max: Price around £5000-£6000 for 3year license,
Pro100: price around £800-£1000 for a full version (£200-£300 per new update).

mrs L, Sketchup is quite good software to play around, if you own an iPad pro, there are many cheap apps you are able to download.

But please please please remember to get your design safety checked by a credible pro before you start knocking down walls or ordering furniture etc !!
