Both skylights will perform as needed and compatible with pricing when comparing apples to apples... as the installation prices go, they can only be installed one way and everyone charges differently, depends on who you hiring.

I am actually going through replacing our skylight and WASCO was about $500 less then Velux. I see so many reviews for Velux...

If the skylight is mounted horizontally (flat), then do NOT install a deck mount Velux skylight. Not sure about Wasco products, but deck mount glass skylights by Velux are not designed for flat roofs. Wasco may have similar limitations, so it might be advisable to check so that you have warranty protection on the product and can be confident in your installation.

Scroll through the pages and each skylight is given a range of options for sizes etc., and there's a little roofing diagram at the beginning of each list of sizing options that provides the recommended roof pitch range.

Velux can do special orders with curb mount skylights that it can't do with deck mount and can make them a little larger than the standard max. size offered in the catalog: up to about 4' x 6' or thereabouts. You only need to ask the company's help desk.

Alternatively, you can have a frame made to drop on over the curb that is only limited by your imagination and wallet and incorporates multiple skylights to cover the area.

If your contractor is not aware of these details, have him contact a nearby knowledgeable Velux or Wasco dealer who can provide a range of options.

Thank you for your advice. We actually have a hip roof so its not flat , but the house was built with a horizontal skylight in the foyer. We did look at velux but the standard sizes wouldn't fit so we either had to get modifications to the opening or custom order raising the price. The Wasco product fits the opening fine. The contractor doing the install is a certified Wasco installer and it has warranty including labor. It is suppose to go in this weekend before the weather turns bad here. I'm hoping he will do a good job as we need a new roof in the future and he will have a chance to bid if it turns out well.

Hi all, I am hoping this thread is still active and monitored because I could really use some expert help.

I had my roofer replace my roof including a 20-year old plastic skylight with the Velux fixed curb mount skylight (see photo below of the old skylight):

The problem is that we live close to a highway and we can now hear the outside noise A LOT more than before even though the roofer said the new Velux skylight has the noise reduction feature. The roofer consulted a Velux rep and the rep told him that if he chose a deck mount, it would have reduced the amount of outside noise. The problem is that Velux apparently does not make the fixed deck mount skylights in size 45 1/8 x 45 1/8, but Wasco does.

The other option was to do an "additional insulation job" on the already installed Velux curb mount skylight hoping it would dampen the outside noise. I have no idea what that means since I am no roofing expert. (see photo below for the NEW curb mount skylight)

Here are my questions, please:

What could be the reason why we now hear more noise than before?

Would changing from a curb mount to a deck mount reduce the outside noise?

Are Wasco skylights just as good with noise reduction as Velux?

How would you best solve the problem of the outside noise (without eliminating the skylights :)?

As far as reasons I would presume the Velux rep (if he truly was a Velux rep and not a building supply or wholesaler rep) would have the correct thoughts. That being said I do not know enough about sound attuation and skylights but I would not be concerned about Wasco quailty and they were recently purchased by Velux besides and no market as Wasco by Velux for the commercial market which Velux realluy was not a player.

I have no idea about noise reduction as we live in a quite street, but we are very happy with the Wasco skylight we had installed. No problems at all, and it was installed by an authorized installer.
