Living Rooms Design Dilemma

where are the televisions???

Just looking through some of the photos of lovely homes on this site and in magazines too, where do these people put the TV? Also I love the strategically placed books on the coffee tables! Makes me believe it’s all staged and not real homes at all.
Does anyone on here make an effort to hide/disguise the TV in their lounge?

All good ideas, these websites and magazines need to start showing rooms with a TV considering the vast majority of homes have them and show ways to display them

We don't but the tv in one of our sitting rooms it's really small, in the other sitting room, it's a bit bigger but it just sits in a corner.

To my mind if a house is a home and you watch TV, it's not a massive surprise if you see one.

That said, I'm not a great fan of giant tvs though and think rooms dominated by huge screens (unless they're a dedicated tv room or home cinema affair) aren't a great look. But I do know there are folks who absolutely love their big televisions.

I much prefer a tv to be minimised in some way. Although I have seen a couple that are a design feature in themselves. I think TVs that are oversized for the room are never a good idea though

I don't see how more furniture is going to solve your problem. It seems unclear, from the pictures posted, why you feel you have this either or situation. A proposed floor plan showing the new window size. would be useful I agree that it is a poor idea to put a tv over a fireplace. If the plan shows the seating it may be possible to put forward an alternative design solution.

I think a concept planner like OnePlan would be invaluable because you would better be able to visualise the options you have. Personally I think that you should take another pass at the kitchen design with the help of a professional as the current kitchen shape will feel very small despite it being a bigger room. I think the breakfast bar is an issue with the current hob placement, I think the work area feels narrow, the distance between the sink and the hob ( which is the area where most prep happens) is relatively small and if it were me I would put the sink on the utility wall so that any mess is partly shielded from view from the living room at least. Personally I would be looking for a three seat sofa and a two seat plus footstool for maximum flexibility. A concept planner would also be able to help you envisage furniture sizes and layout so you know how big to purchase- after all 3 seat sofas range in size from 180cm to 280cm. You might also want to consider TV position in the living room. I suspect you are removing the chimney breast as once extended the chimney would no longer be central to the room- but perhaps you can save that money and put the TV and a fire side by side.

I've been trying to figure out that one toom I only have a single reception room and one bedroom so I can't exactly create a dedicated TV room.

There are so many tricks though like putting it on a darker coloured wall, putting it behind doors in an alcove, attaching it to the wall and surrounding it with shelves or pictures, or recessing it into the wall so it feels less dominant

I like when they are visually minimised by painting the wall in a dark shade.
Most homes don’t have a dedicated tv/cinema room, and I know my husband a children wouldn’t want to have to open a cupboard etc each time.

It’s like the bathrooms with no toilet paper!

And kitchens with only attractive looking food displayed, not a tin of soup or cardboard fajita pack in sight! It would be nice sometimes to see a home which looks like people actually live there!

Hi All, The problem with a TV in professional photo is not that we don't like them its just that they are such a distraction, if they are switched on they will clash with the room if they are left off they just leave a large black hole in the image. I have personally hidden a television behind a sofa to stop it ruining a shoot! However if a television has been built into a piece of furniture it will always be left in place its just that sometimes it doesn't make a great photo!

Funnily I’ve tried to make line look like part of the furniture best I can! Bigger unit under the tv so It also looks smaller is another trick as I hate the oversized look of a tv on a wall too! Over the fireplace is another pet hate.
