Help with Smart lighting startup.

I was hoping to invest in smart lighting to my home renovation that I am doing. I have already invested in underfloor heating and hoping to connect Nest or any other smart thermostat. It is daunting as to where I should start in terms of lighting. Should I go with Philips hue hub or will Philips bulb be able to connect through Nest ? I have been looking on the net to find out as to where to start. I was planning of LED spot lights in lounge, dining area, kitchen and corridor, but having looked into smart lighting I feel I should go with that. I have seen few bulbs which doesn't need any hub and it has all WiFi builtin. Mainly I need the corridor of my bungalow using the motion sensor to control lighting which is connecting path to all rooms. Hope there is few geeks out there who could help me. Just adding floor plan with highlighted area mainly being considered at present, Hope adding few lights in bedroom also wouldn't hurt my pockets that much.

I did not have a comment on the technical side of things but wanted to add that you will likely not use the spotlights in the dining room or lounge preferring eye level table lights which are kinder when you are trying to relax.
I might also consider different lighting in the corridor as per the photo

I would strongly advise against using Nest or the smart light bulbs with Wifi in. The reason I advise this is following a training on Thursday with my smart technology supplier. He advised me that whilst Nest have an appealing aesthetic they don't work well. I think if you want to use Smart technology you would benefit from professional advise on linking your existing heating system and then ensuring you can add any further technology such as lighting and TV or audio in future easily. Having a hub is very much the way to go, you also want to get your wiring configured correctly from the earliest possible stage. There are better control systems for different elements, but they all talk through IP. There is also one which ensures consistent standards and means they won't develop further technology that can't link to the previous one. If you would like further information please contact me.

Hi Hannah P Of course we would have to say that the best smart technology to have would be the whole hog! Have everything such as your lighting, blinds, audio visual and even heating all controlled from one place such as an iPad or your smart phone. But it all depends of course on how much of a budget you have to spend and how much you would be comfortable integrating in your home. Are you thinking of investing in some smart technology yourself? Smart technology doesn't have to involve a huge initial outlay as could could perhaps start with something small such as our Q Motion Blinds which can be fully controlled by an app on your smartphone or tablet allowing you to control your blinds as you wish. Communitec, well I for one would like to put in a full electronic home security system with motion activated cameras so if there is an alarm I can view everything on my phone but my house has concrete walls and ceilings so potential installers all want to leave all cables on the surface - even wifi systems require power cables or new batteries way too often. For the same reason the rear speakers for my theatre system are in front with the other speakers - apart from cables to run the wall behind is a glass block feature wall. As for veering off topic goes, well I see people commenting on the appearance of things like thermostats and what functions they have as well as a lot on their aesthetics, so lighting, switches, sockets and control interfaces are on topic really. The fact that a lot of people simply accept these items without thought just goes to show how today's new tech becomes tomorrow's standard and expected items. Where we locate things has changed a lot due to changes in usage patterns and acceptance of items in different settings - phones are rarely in hallways now for example, even though that was a standard location up to the 1970s (and are disappearing in favour of hand phones). My computer always used to be in a room used as an office but I'm typing this on front of the TV on my notebook (no more PC) - tech evolving to suit environment or attitudes evolving to allow tech into what were exclusion zones or perhaps a mixture of the two?

Twins, they like there thing identical, having your home being rewired, its a great opportunity to create different lighting modes. i would have 3 circuits circuit 1) Mainlight ( option to have just a single point for a pendent , or you could have recessed spots, even surface mounted circuit 2) corner spots ( there good for night light , if you do have lights in the corner it a good idea to connect them to a dimmer!) circuit 3) 1 single spot above the beds and the switch by the bed side table /or wall mounted light fitting for reading

Trying to create a bed that looks good in winter and flowers in summer needs careful planting. Aspect is crucial - sun lovers will hate shade and shade lovers will frazzle in the sun. I think a few small evergreens such as Hebe or Euonymus would be a start. They are short evergreens and the Hebe has white or purple flowers in the summer. They come in various leaf tones. A row of lavender always looks good, but they need a sunny border, and they do look a bit dead in winter. You can also plant groups of bulbs such as miniature daffodils and grape hyacinths ( ideal time to plant is now) which will give you lovely yellow and blue colour in the spring. Then I would fill in with short summer flowering perennials such as Geraniums, Geums and Erigeron - these do die down in the winter, but regrow in late spring. Dig the soil over and add a good helping of compost which will help them grow and water regularly until they are established. Don’t forget your local nursery or garden centre staff will also help you choose plants if you are unsure! The plants below are Hebe, Euonymus and Mahonia, all are evergreen.
