Living in a Victorian terrace, I’ve been pondering the same thing and still can’t decide. Given my dilemma, I delved into some Feng Shui articles that seem to universally conclude they kitchens being the first room you enter is a real no no. Reading elsewhere, it also seems to put potential future buyers off, and of course it’s easier to work with where the plumbing is already. My jury is still out, however, and I’m a way off doing the work. I’ll therefore be keeping a watching eye on your developments. I think there equal arguments for and against though...

I would always want my kitchen at the back of the house

For the most part ( unless you are able to dig from front to back and vice versa ), you are dictated to by the position of your drains.

For instance Violet above, If her plumbing is at the rear of the house ( most likely ), you can't really dig up the whole of a terrace house to put the plumbing at the front. It would be cost prohibitive and disrupt the whole ground floor.

For the most part these days however, people would prefer to have their kitchens at the rear with an open plan.

I think it depends on the room, the light levels at the front, the privacy at the front (think about making your first coffee of the day), and how much a kitchen island will be a visual barrier to the garden if placed in front of the bifolds. You should also think about your lifestyle- if may be that by putting the kitchen by the bifolds you create a traffic route through your kitchen (think about kids running in or having parties). It is possible you might feel that a kitchen at the front would be easier to work in and a dining table in front of the bifolds might be less of a barrier to the view.

Thanks for all your replies, yes we were leaning towards kitchen at the back but had concerns like Jonathan about our island/table creating a visual barrier that blocks our garden views. The front of the house is south facing so most light comes from there. The room is 8m X 6m wide approx.

I agree with Jonathan, it depends on so make different things about your property including light levels, its location, window views, how you use the space, etc.

I've always thought that kitchens should be at the back and don't like some new-build houses locally where you can see straight into the kitchen from the street. However, when we renovated our property, we put the kitchen at the front. This was in a new extension so new drains had to be put in anyway rather than moving old ones. The front of our house it quite high off the ground whereas the back is closer to the garden. We're also at the end of a cul-de-sac and set back from the road so no-one can see in to the kitchen. If our living space was at the front, we wouldn't have had much in the way of views as we'd only see tree tops from a seated position. Also, at the front of the house, we have the sun in the morning which I like first thing in the morning for breakfast and then the sun is at the back in the afternoon which works well for seating and dining. So think carefully about what would work for you in your house rather than where a kitchen 'should' be.

Some homes are narrow and the kitchen next to the hallway make sense if the back of the house is wider for a lounge. Our house is small and square, so our kitchen is in the back (north) with the diner next to it and the lounge in the front (south).

Can't really tell without a floorplan.

Is also very personal, how much time you spend in the rooms. I personally prefer not having people looking at me when i watch netflix than when i cook 🤣

So I am kitchen in the front kind of person, (in a layout tho where is not the first room you see when you enter the house.

I our house when entering, after the hallway you will see the massive living open space and the kitchen in the front is accessed from the big open plan.

Also noise levels counts, our front room is very loud because of the road and we prefer to have more privacy/calm when we chill on the couch . Also in this way the living is closer to the garden and become a very social place when we have friends <3
