Best layout for family kitchen / dining space in 5.5m x 3.2m room?
Comments (11)There are a few problems:- If you run the units right down the right hand wall, you make the space in the dining room narrower. You need approx 7ft plus across for dining table, that's 3 ft for the table and 2 ft for a chair either side to be pulled out in order to sit down. This leaves you with about 1ft between the side of the table and the kitchen unit next to it. Also, you will have a nib on the left hand wall where the dining room ends and the kitchen begins due to the steel that needs to sit on top of it, ( the size of the nib will be dictated by the construction of the wall & what it's supporting above ) so the space will still look divided if you don't disguise it with units above. ( Don't forget the party wall agreement ! ) I don't think you have space for units right the way down and the table and chairs. Plus you are limiting yourself to just over 6 metres of units, once you start putting an integrated fridge, then freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, you won't have much left for all the food plus pots & pans, drawers etc. All this and the dining table is not near the garden, where it would be better off. ( in my opinion ) You also need to consider the windows at the dining room end as they look quite close to the wall, will you be able to fit a unit in there without going across the window? You also need to consider the windows at the dining room end as they look quite close to the wall, will you be able to fit a unit in there without going across the window? If you could overcome the plumbing and it should be possible, then maybe you'd be better of with this:- Move the kitchen to the dining room and have the ' U' shape in there. You can still have just units on the bottom, you'll have over 9 metres of wall space for units so a third more. You won't need to worry about the nib being in the way. The dining area will be plenty big enough for the table and chairs, and you'll be able to eat and look on to the garden. You should be ok with the plumbing, it's only water feed and water waste from the sink, dishwasher and washing machine. It has to go under the floor further but at least it's not a soil pipe!...See MoreIs it an odd layout to have dining room behind kitchen...
Comments (2)Hi Amyevania, I can't see too well from the image but it looks like a good layout to me baring in mind what you want from the lighter area of the property. I think it may become annoying moving passed the dining table to get to the kitchen and living space but if you're heart is set on the dining table being in the lighter area then I can't see anything wrong with that :) Do you have a designer to help with you're colour pallet and furniture placement? Or is it just jiggling around a space you already have? The colour of furniture and walls in the darker area will have an effect of the feel of the space. Good luck :)...See MoreWhich way to have the kitchen island?
Comments (25)Hi . Interested to read your article as I am looking at lots of ideas for an extension to give us an open plan kitchen diner plus separate utility room. I am spending lots of time thinking of layout/ dimensions etc and it really comes down to how you use the space.Just thought I would say first option looks better. Sink needs to be near or directly behind hob. I think I spend more time at the sink than the hob. Preparing veg, filling pans, kettle, draining veg, rinsing dishes, so to be able to see rest of room from sink is good. The other thing I have noticed is the fridge freezer in our house gets a lot of use in our house (especially now my kids are teenagers) and for me it would definitely have to be next to work surfaces and also away from entry doors/ doorways. I can’ t see where your fridge is, but think about how often you go in it and why to make sure it,s in best place. Putting shopping away, taking food out to prepare meals, sandwiches, snacks, make a cup of tea, getting a juice, drink etc. Also where are your bins.?. I find They should be right next to sink. Ours are not and I am constantly trailing drips etc across floor between sink and bins. Def wouldn’t want them in cupboard either- foot operated ones are cleaner and quicker to use. Be great to see what your final result is....See MoreLayout for L shaped kitchen / dining room / family room
Comments (3)Hello, We always begin our layout packages by asking lots of questions in a briefing session. It's these answers which then allow us to decide upon the best layout(s) to suit your needs. A few of the main questions I think would be most useful with this decision are: 1) Do you need to be able to see the playroom/family room from the kitchen? ...some people like to be able to see children playing when they are cooking, in which case I would put this in the centre of the room 2) When do you use these two (family room and dining room) areas? ...if you use the dining room only at nighttime and at the weekend, do you want to be walking around the dining table to get to the kitchen all the time? Or it may help you question whether you want it in the lightest part of the room / or the darkest. 3) Do you need a TV in the family area/playroom? ...it doesn't look like there are a lot of options for TV placement towards the back. We have several questionnaires that allow us to create layouts for clients so maybe writing some of these questions down for yourself will help you organise your thoughts. Alternatively, if you are redoing the kitchen as well, maybe tackle it all at once and get a concept planner or interior designer in to look at the layout for you - it will help you to visualise your options and hopefully get to the ideal layout for you. I really hope it helps. Do stay in touch and let us know what you go for ...would be great to see how the space unfolds :) Best, Gina...See MoreJonathan
