Hi all! I found this lovey piece of artwork which I’d like to modernise a bit. I love the hot air balloon but not too keen on the frame.

So far my idea would be to paint the frame however I’m unsure of the colour. I have some little greene lamp black paint left over which I could use but I feel it might be too dark and too predictable.

I am looking for ideas on how to modernise the painting, the frame or both !

Nice picture. Is it actually a real painting?

If so I wouldn’t ‘modernise’ that, but painting the frame in your Lamp Black will certainly update it.

May be a ‘safe’ colour but at least you won’t make the wrong colour choice. 🙂

Out of interest, what size is it?

Thanks! It’s definitely not a real painting but it seems to be printed on either thick canvas or paper - as the back of the frame is hammered in I haven’t opened it up yet.

It’s about 50 cm x 60 cm excluding the frame

Another thought would be to balance it visually by adding a false display of wood stacked up in a recess. A mantel shelf could then span the entire width providing a visual divide. The upper portion could take an art piece or mirror across the section with out looking unbalanced.

It's a lovely fireplace. With new tiles, it will look great either lightened or painted, IMO. Painting is more fashionable at the moment, wood will be more respectful to the original. But either will be beautiful. (It's always a relief when horrible tiles are non-original and can be removed with a clean conscience, isn't it? One of my fireplaces had hideous cream tiles from the 1980s which I was delighted to rip out. The other is original brick and I'm gritting my teeth and preserving the original, even though it's not at all what I'd choose.)

You could paint the frame and black would certainly be trendy. Nice picture. You can buy a new frame, but they do tend to be pretty standard sizes, but worth a look. Dunelm and The Range sell lots of frames.

Thanks Sonia - I’ve had a look at new frames but as you said they’re pretty standard sizes and also I struggle to find frames with a glass front rather than plexi..
