We have had them in glass doors before. A glacier did it for us. Cut new panel off site and then came to fit it.

Had one fitted in upvc back door. They replaced bottom glass panel with a upvc panel and cut hole for cat flap. It cost £50 a few years

Mine is in a uPVC glass door that went in when we had an extension. We had to ask for it at the time of the build and the door manufacturer put it in for us. It sits in the double glazed glass panel. 10 years on it’s still fine and no problems.

We have had cat flaps in both brick work with a tunnel and also glass doors. We have done it ourselves in the brickwork and when we got a new glass door, we got it the company to cut it.

Before you do either, choose the size of the cat flap. We opted for the smart pet door (cat flap) as it was bigger so it was more comfortable for our cats and future proof if we get a Maine coon... it also tells us when the cats have gone in and out the house and what their routines.

Hello, we have a similar question if you don’t mind me tagging onto this thread! We are going to get an extension with double glass doors but need a cat flap. Would it be cheaper and easier to have a uPVC or wooden bottom panel on both the doors, one of which we would put the cat flap in, or would it be equally cheap and easy to have it all glass with the cat flap cut into that?

That’s a good question, my partner who needs it has an existing full length French upvc glass door so we were thinking he’d need to replace the whole pane.

I think it would be cheaper to have uvpc or wooden bottom part, you will have to contact a glazier. If you don’t have glass at the base, I think any DIY person can install a cat flap.

There is something nice about having a whole glazed door, it looks stylish, let’s in more light, and enables the cat to look outside before going out....

Thanks! Our cat looks out through the current cat flap anyway to make sure the coast is clear before committing himself! I agree glass looks better, but actually if we then put a cat flap in one pane it might spoil the look of it anyway if it’s double doors as it would be off-centre. If our cat flap ever needs replacing perhaps uPVC would be easier, as you say we could do it ourselves.

Although, once the hole in the glass is there, you can change or upgrade your car flap as many times as you wish...

We have a local company called Lock & Glaze who do all sorts of glazing repairs including installing cat flaps in glass. They are based in Baldock, Herts and get many recommendations on Facebook. No idea if it’s in your area, but worth a look?

I got mine put in through 11 inches of wall which a guess is double brick. A handyman/builder drilled through the brick to create a tunnel and fitted the catflap. I got a friend to help me cement and tile the inside to make it safe for the cats to come through and easy to wipe clean. It was awkward and fiddly so I think the large handyman didn’t want to do that bit 🤦🏻‍♀️
