So where is Ken?

I’m sure many of you are like me and are wondering why Ken hasn’t posted lately. I was able to find an old contact number from back in 2012 when I visited him and when I called I spoke to his daughter. Ken had a heart attack at the beginning of the month and is in the hospital. He is doing ok and was glad to hear my message that I was praying for him. Hopefully he will be back posting soon.

    its going to take a while to get back up to speed here.. but i will be hovering around ...


    worst part is.. this was my morning coffee and cigarettes .... and im off both now.. so whats the point of sitting in the cold basement reading posts ....

      Rather than knocking walls completely, can you knock parts of wall A and B to achieve an open plan feel, but leaving some walls for units? It's hard to advise you though without seeing the full floor plan. Also, are you totally committed to a tall oven unit? Would you go for a built under oven?

      Hello Ann, Sounds like an exciting project! What about approaching the layout the other way around.. If you had for example a double or 3 seater sofa roughly where the 2 green chairs are... Then situate the 2 chairs opposite this...Keeping all windows free... This opens up the area nicely and does not create a cave effect.. If you decorate seamlessly, again you should not really notice the differing heights... Have a large pendant over the dining table and another along same plane roughly where the living room area starts.. ie in front of the current green chairs.. Have a console table behind the suggested sofa placement which ends no further forward that current chair placement.. Vase of flowers or something.. Then you can walk round this into the room.. chairs and coffee table can angle round and low lamps and a floor lamp would be good to illuminate this portion where the ceiling is lower.. Perhaps consider the tv on the other corner away from the fireplace.. It could sit on a nice cabinet in the corner between the window /sliding door.. : ))

      I haven't tried voice control for the home yet - it's such exciting technology! This week I have been experimenting with Voice Typing on my phone (was feeling too lazy to type long words using my thumbs, ha!). I think it's something that's going to get ever more popular.

      Whewwww, so glad to see you back Ken! Don't you worry one bit about giving up coffee. I have ordered so many seeds, trying my hand at winter sowing, and planning for new perennials. I have spent years under your tutelage and you know I still don't know what I'm doing, right? So, I'll send you enough questions and whines to keep your adrenalin pumped and running. Maxwell House has nothing on me :) I hope your recovery is speedy and full....All the best.

      Ken, you shouldn’t be sitting in that cold basement anyway…spring is coming and it’ll be time to be sitting outside in sun surveying your landscape and watching the life cycle of spring bloom. Welcome back!

      I was just thinking about you---and happy to hear that you have returned home. Please do find a healthy alternative to coffee and cigarettes so that you can hide in the basement and answer a lot of posts!

      Herbal tea and peppermint or cinnamon sticks. I wouldn't do any of that that in a cold basement though.

      Good to see you back in the saddle! Give yourself some easy time, at first. Trying to educate my friend right now on the phone as to which perennials she should plant in her yard. I myself am not up to planting yet---still too much to finish in house remodeling! When I get to the yard, I'll appreciate your expertise. See? You are NEEDED!

      Phew! Yay! Welcome back! What better way to start off the week than by seeing your post! So very glad you are back home and on the mend. But yeah, no more basement! Sit in a warm sunny spot and read the forums and look through catalogs. That will get you ready to get back in the garden.

      @ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 you clearly are an important member of this houzz forum. And so we need you to be healthy. And so the closest you should come to tobacco is growing a beautiful Nicotiana annual :). (I can send you seeds ;))

      Maybe switch to tea? Half the caffeine plus a bunch of other benefits but just as addictive.

      It's good to see you back, Ken! Every time I see a duckduckgo commercial I've wondered how you were doing. Now you need to find a way to post from your most comfy chair so you can take it easy but still be here. Wishing you a steady recovery.

      Welcome back! Actually this is such a relief. I was worried. Let The healing begin and be thorough.


      Sorry your comfort items are no longer allowed. Hopefully you can find other comfort items that are less hard on your system. Maybe you could get yourself a heating pad for your chair and a cup warmer to put your healthy green tea on.

      ken, I was thoroughly addicted to nicotine after about 30 years of smoking. I quit twice for about and year and went back after having a drink and bumming a cigarette. The last time I quit, I got the pills from the doctor, I used nicorette gum, then later plain chewing gum. I realized that I could never, ever have another cigarette. It gets easier each day. It does take a while to not to ever want another cigarette. Even now, after 20 or so years, about once every year or two, I'll see someone with a cigarette and want one. It's very seldom, though.

      Take it one step, one urge at a time. You'll get there.

      I always like your blunt, common sense answers.

      My heart attacks put me in the hospital with a double by-pass, open heart surgery. I'm fine now, but a little worse for wear at 78. At least I didn't have to give up cigarettes. I quit them way back in the early 1970s. Weight wasn't an issue either, just old age, I guess.

      You take it easy and keep contributing to the Forum. You're a big part of it.

      My Dad had a heart attack when he was in his 60s - my Mom is a nurse and saved him in the middle of the night while the paramedics were on the way, thank god! and mostly thank my Mom and the docs. He had many many more years after that and finally agreed to see the doc regularly and stopped smoking and also drinking. I cherish those extra decades with him, even though I live far away, we had great visits and much more frequent phone calls. As I approach age 60, I know I need to slow down on the wine and beer, sorry if TMI.

      Ken, you are so much appreciated on this forum... through the years I've mostly been just a lurker, but you and others keep it alive!

      Aw, Ken, hope you are back to your old self soon. You are the reason I became a hosta addict and started spending so much time on GW. I miss your posts! Take it easy. Follow the docs directions. And laugh every day.

      Hi Ken,

      glad you are back, a wave and a smile from your favourite European plant nerd,


      try tea (do you get Assam or Ceylon over there... ;- )

      and pull up your big boy pants, quitting smoking is hard, been there, nearly failed, luckily 20y + ago, did it in the end and never went back (former boyfriend, now DH hated it back then which helped with my motivation)


      if you want to we send you a comic/ cartoon whatever in rotation every morning to start a new ritual without ziggies...

      I was thinking of you today, Ken. We had about 8 inches of snow all melt over the weekend and the garden was soaking wet and I had to resist walking on the lawn or anywhere off the paths, because I always remember when you had the threads for newbies and told them never to compact the soil by walking on it wet! I think of that every spring. [g]

      Ken, glad to hear that you are on the mend, and I send my best wishes on quitting smoking; it’s tough but I am pulling for you. Take good care and do what the doc and PT say you need to do.

      Hi Ken, I haven't been on GW since about 2 weeks after we got the news of your heart attack

      I was scrolling frantically to find the thread sort of afraid there being no news or no good news.

      How wonderful to see you posted and everyone chiming in with their gratitude for you being you and living to tell the tale. I too was thinking of going into the garden and heard your firm admonition Do Not Do That. Looking for more pearls or cow patties of wisdom from you for many years to come. Idabean/Marie
