Garden inspiration please…

We are having the front path re paved & would like to remove the hedge & do something with the small patch outside the front door. Possibly cutting a small section from under the window if needed. Would really welcome some ideas & love something modern & a little different. Thank you 🙏

Hi, what are you thinking of using for the front path - colour / type of paving as that will affect the style / look of the rest of the garden. I’d be tempted to leave some of the hedging as it does at least delineate your boundary. In terms of digging out a planting area under your window - if it’s too small it won’t be worth it as the plants won’t have much impact.
It might be worth looking at other gardens in the street to see what works with other similar styles of property.

Thanks Tamp75 for your advice. Was looking at light coloured square paving with dark grey edge border. A few other houses have cut out under the window & put shrubs & stones there.
Just wanted something a bit different.

Depending on how much of the car park you'd like to remove, my first thought would be to investigate the cost effectiveness of knocking out some of the back wall of the garage to allow the work to be carried out. You could then either make good again afterwards or maybe put in another set of garage doors, or just a regular door. The door option might also make it easier, once the work has finished, to bring things like lawn mowers/rubbish bins through to the back garden rather than down the narrow 36" gap. I also think it likely (as this was a business) that the car park could have quite a thick layer of tarmac, plus hardcore, which could mean the soil underneath is not in great condition.

Hi Vanessa, The idea using the space for an outdoor seating is a greta one, but rather than plants in pots, which can be very high maintenance, why not build some raised beds, so that you can have planting around the seating area. This would make the area feel more cosy and defined within the overall garden. A fire pit in the middle would work really well, but this could simply be a square or circular area with some a trim of fire bricks and a base of sand or hardcore which you could light your fire on top of. Sometimes simple fire pits are the best! Good luck look forward to hearing what you do.

This all depends on your budget for the project. In similar front gardens I have used galvanised water troughs from farm shops (Mole Valley have them at reasonable prices) and planted with nice structural bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra is one of my favourites) . Two troughs down each side will frame the house. Alternatively two large planters with either bay standards or, in a sunny aspect, olive standards (lollipop shape) either side of the door gives timeless and elegant style to the entrance. To ensure you get exactly the right garden at the back I recommend contacting a local garden designer to come and talk through some ideas. They will help work out your practical needs for the space and help maximise the budget.

On the Alan Titchmarsh Love Your Garden prog they often create gardens suitable for the disabled. They usually create a very gently sloping path from the house to the end of the garden, usually in a semi circle or a complete circle. That way the garden is accessible all the way round. If the middle of the circle is grassed then that’s great for the other children to play on. As far as decking goes, I agree it is slippy, but I’ve just painted mine in a non slip stain and it really is non slip, even in the rain. I only painted it a few weeks ago so I will see how it looks in a years time! I used Screwfix no nonsense anti slip stain in Slate. Such a small area will be difficult to plant up as there isn’t the room to create impact. You could plant Hebe’s or Skimmia, both evergreen and low growing. Or maybe a climbing rose up the wall, but it will lose its leaves in the winter.
