Design Dilemma Exteriors Renovating

How do I update this front elevation?

We are adding 1,000 sq ft addition to this house that will include a new kitchen and owners suite. We are also looking to pull out the front entry and update the exterior as it is quite dated. I would love to hear your thoughts on exterior updates that incorporate the addition! TIA

I think you can go for l-shaped plan with addition on back side.

As for the front I would go with porch.

So you want someone to give you thoughts on an addition when you have provided no photos nor dimensions of the inside - Lordy!

Gates and Fences UK thank you so much for your advice, in the end I've taken it and today I've ordered Red Cedar Cladding and I'm going to treat it with cedar oil as you suggested. I think having to coat it yearly will be well worth the effort to have the beauty of Cedar as opposed to the practicality of UPVC Cladding.

Hello sgsmyth. Kerb appeal will be significantly improved by clever landscaping at the front of the house but for the house itself I'd be inclined to look at the front door and garage area as the main priority for change. Visually, the garage door is overwhelming and the front door underwhelming - try to balance this or even reverse the impact. Blend the window and front door together by increasing the size of both and joining them (the practicality of this idea depends on whether this window is in another room or part of the hall). To reduce the impact of the garage door I suggest replacing it with a panelled door (panels shaped similar to the window panes so you repeat the pattern). When you get around to repainting the fascia boards (currently white) I'd choose a colour that blends with the brickwork, this will draw less attention to the flat roof. If you have the budget, and if you use the garage for storage rather than parking, I'd seriously think about incorporating the garage into the ground floor living space and replacing the garage door with a window. I'm in final stage of my house construction and stuck with front elevation. I have used grey tiles, which in day light looks like a grey structure. Can you help me in it? Really you need an architect and then you post the pics of thelevations the architect gives you. I really dislike additions tacked on to MCM homes with no plan to keep the original style as much as posssible so usually I add on to the back of th home The pictures tell us nothing since the first one is totally dark

Like Patricia said, I hope you have an architect (not just a draftsman). 1,000 square feet is a lot of expense and opportunity for error without one. We put an addition on our last house which was about 400-500 square feet and we solved several problems with it. An architect can help you to do more with less. If you have an architect already, that's who you should be asking about your entry.

@Kandrewspa, thanks for that perspective. We are in the process of meeting with architects now. One told us that we should just tear the house down and start over because we have a nice lot...But yes, I agree, that it is a lot of expense to end up with something that doesn't make much sense. Certain transitions would need to be designed in the interior that have us stumped and led us down the architect path - its just not as easy as you would think to hire an architect that is available AND understands what you want and how to design it into reality - at least where I live now. And I don't mind leaning into the MCM, in fact my husband was a fine woodworker and had the privilege of working on a FLW restoration, but there is drab MCM and beautiful MCM and this house needs some attention.
