Lighting Design Dilemma Renovating

Which smart lights for 20+ Down lights?

Downstairs, we will have 20+ down lights, a couple of wall lights and then some more decorative lights. If we would like to use smart lights, what should we go for? I read about Philips hue but not sure if it is the best option. Also are smart lights worth it? We never had it.

We still have full flexibility as we are currently renovating our house and all previous lights have been removed as are the ceilings.

I would really appreciate your advice and experience.

I've never used smart lights but I do rate Philips lights as some of them dim to a slight pinktinge. I have tried so many different LEDS and personally I dislike most of them. The Philips ones are worth a google as the warmth and light quality they give out seems very pleasing to my eye.

Craig, your question on Lighting Control. The rise of LED has brought new dimension to the lighting control debate. Lighting Control Systems such as Lutron are the best way to dim LED. We use Lighting Control Systems with 0-10v, DALI and DMX dimming and it's possible to get very smooth dimming to really low levels. I don't really want to suggest one system over another. I'm sure they all have their strengths. Rako offers wireless flexibility for retrofit applications, Lutron has a superb heritage and history of fantastic reliability. I'd look for dealers who are really experienced in using the system and a manufacturer with a strong local support infrastructure. Hi @shanagarry80, thanks for your comments! I'm not at home right now so I can't be sure how big the extractor fan actually is but it is over a 90cm hob and oven, so must be at least 90cm. It doesn't look particularly large in situ and the inbuilt lights are very good for illuminating the cooking area. Have a look at Gutmann's website; as I said in one of my earlier comments, other companies do make similar extractors but our kitchen people thought this one best, however our kitchen is now 3 years old and a lot can happen in that time! Hope you have fun designing your new kitchen!

Hi Margaux, what smart home system are you looking at using? Different lights integrate better with specific systems. Should you use Alexa or Google Home, Sonoff light switches are great - you mount them in the wall and you can pair it with any down lighter of your choice. They provide you with the switch that fits onto the wall. If you're thinking of going with Apple Home you may need to look at different lights.

I was focused on lights rather than a smart home system for the house. So really good advice that I need to look at it as a whole. Which one is your preference and why?

A smart home system can either be hardwired (so basically the lightswitches and sockets themselves are smart. Lightwaverf is an example), or the individual bulbs and plugs themselves are smart (like Philips Hue, TP-link Tapo and so on). I have a mixture of both, and there are pros and cons to each. It is worth bearing in mind that the protocols for controlling smart devices are evolving, and the new ‘Matter’ protocol is intended to allow different smart devices from different manufacturers to be compatible with each other and better integrated with the various controlling apps. So if I were starting from scratch I’d be looking at individual smart devices (which can be added to in an adhoc fashion and more easily updated than hardwired systems) which are Matter capable.

It really is dependent on how much time you are willing to invest into setting up your smart home system. Should you want something quick and easy, Amazon or Google Home are probably your better options (still great quality) and integrates with more products on the market. Apple Home is a lot more limiting in terms of other products that they integrate with so requires a little more research and custom integration. Hope that helps!
