Coving for a Scandi interior?

Major design dilemma, I would be so glad of your help!

We're part way through a new build and are going for a simplistic scandi look inside. The question is, do we have coving, and if so, what style?

We're likely to go for a tall square edge skirting (approx. 200mm tall) and the ceilings are high at 2.7m so it feels like we should have some type of coving but would appreciate any comments/thoughts/suggestions.

I would go for no coving. Simpler, stylish and actually makes a space feel bigger.

No coving, Siobhan is 100% right. I think your skirtings are high too. I have a minimalist scandi style house and my skirtings are less than 100mm high with a bullnose for easy cleaning. My ceilings are double volume and 5m in the open plan part. Don't forget very simple architrave too. Ours are fussy which doesn't suit the house. We didn't convert it ourselves.

Hello Emma, Please don't get rid of these... You can still have a really ultra modern interior in a period setting... In fact for example Victorian and Georgian period buildings look amazing with a modern look... It all just depends on what you choose. Also you may wish to make a feature of these by choosing really bold colours to enhance these features.. .. : ))

Hello Guy, You could go for white kitchen worktop to achieve the Scandinavian look. We have recently finished a project where the client desired to have white glass kitchen worktop, it looks amazing! You could think of wooden worktop too. Scandinavian style kitchens are white and minimalistic with some lovely features. Walls are kept white and it' nice to add some ornaments as well. Hi George, What a great property, coming along nicely. I agree with sksj1 - it is not essential to have one now. I would go for the picture rail now and save until you can afford to have it done properly in the style that matches the space. You also then have time to shop around and get things in sales or if you are using an interior designer somewhere in the property, they would be able to sort something for you and use trade discounts etc. If you are set on one of the two choices you have shown above then the larger one will have more of an impact - the other one may get lost which might look odd with the taller and detailed skirting I see there. Hi, congratulations on buying your new home. 1930’s houses were heavily influenced by the arts and craft movement. Interior architraves and mouldings would have been much simpler than in Victorian homes with less fancy detailing and more clean simple lines. Dado rails possibly but in a typical 1930’s house you’d more commonly see a picture rail. If it’s a fairly large house you might also see oak paneling in the hallway. Here’s some inspo:

I removed the coving in the bedrooms upstairs when I renovated the wardrobes in two rooms and I was surprised at how much more spacious the rooms appear now. I also have higher than normal skirtings which I actually think also give a more spacious appearance bu they are dust catchers. In my next home, I would none. The plastering needs to be precise as builders use skirtings to mask imperfections.

I would say no coving. Our skirtings are 15cm high square edge dust catchers. I prefer them to bull nose though.
