RENOVATIONS for dummies.
Hello everyone! I am planning major renovations. Relocating kitchen, moving walls, removing bay window, replacing 3500 square feet of hard wood floor and any joist repairs needed (termite damage) and complete overhaul of primary bathroom…..while simultaneously finding and repairing unpermitted work, termite damage, etc. So I need to discover and make necessary repairs to the bones while doing cosmetic updates. I also need someone who will design the new layout for kitchen and advise on removing walls/building walls to change the layout.
Who do I call first? What’s the standard process
when hiring a company for all of this work? What are some red flags? Contract language to avoid? Is it normal to pay a large amount upfront? Will I have to sign a contract before viewing any designs? Will I need more than one company?
Can someone with experience and knowledge explain exactly what they would do if they were me? What questions are you asking up front? Should I have a special insurance policy while contractors are working? What are some deal breakers? Checklist? All advice welcome. It’s so much that I don’t even know where to start and I’ll be investing a significant amount money so my fear of getting it wrong is paralyzing.
