Basic BBQ island (fancier grill than necessary) makes a great "outdoor kitchen". I have a grill and a mini-fridge on my balcony (built into a converted bath vanity!) and I use it several times a week (more often than we use our inside kitchen). You could build this so it backed up into the retaining wall and make it part of that wall. It would be great to add a small prep sink to it as well. I'll send you photos next week of one we are in the middle of constructing on a roof top deck for a client in South Mission Beach.

This caught my eye because it was designed by, "The Gilson Group".

Most terraced walls have plants or grass in them. How do you feel about that? I prefer low maintenance wherever possible.

Kind of "out there", but can you picture the vertical garden at the back instead of your fence? You would still have a normal gate or archway to get to and from your carport, but the fence would be replaced with foilage.

I love the look of this firepit. This is a wood burner, but we could do something similar with natural gas.

Retaining wall doesn't have to be in a straight line.

I built in a similar water feature in my own side yard at a previous home I had. Very soothing to hang out, listen to the water and watch the fish!

I like how they incorporated the benches into the retaining wall.
